Copied from Hephzibah Baptist Assoc. Centennial 1794-1894 by W. L. Kilpatrick DD, Augusta, Ga. 1788 Bark Camp Constituting Members. Of those who were members at the time of its constitution we are able to call the names of but four - Rev. Miles Scarboro, Silas Scarboro, Zebulon Cock and John Allen. The first named died in October 1790. The second had descendants in Emanuel County, one of whom is an earnest minister of the gospel. The third has a grandson, B. F. Cock , living in Coweta County, from whom much of this info here recorded was received. The fourth has descendants who are now members of this church, still holding to the faith of their ancestor, while others of his posterity have connected themselves with other denominations. Notably among the later may be cited the name of Rev. Young J. Allen, of the Methodist connection, and who for years bas been on of the trusted counselors of the Emperor of China. My ancestor, Jonathon Coleman, was a charter member of Bark Camp. Jonathon is the father of most Colemans from Emanuel County. The church abandoned in 1958 and had fallen on bad times. About a year and half ago a group of interested people gathered together and donated money, time and talent to reclaim this historical church and cemetery. This Saturday, April 23 we will have our 2nd annual meeting at 11 a.m. (A descendant of Rev. Allen will be unveiling a bronze plaque at the meeting Saturday) Any interested parties are welcome to come. We will have our meeting and enjoy an old fashioned dinner on the ground. We put a new roof on, painted the church inside and out, reworked the windows, had new shutters put up. We now have a deep well, and bathrooms! All the trees have been cut from the cemetery. Please go by and look when traveling Hwy. 56 from Midville to Waynesboro. The church is not locked. We plan to have a web site soon. I am the secretary-treasurer of the Bark Camp Association, If you would like to be added to the mailing list send me your info.
