    3. Hello list, Here is my file on what I believe is the family of my 3great-grandmother Rachel Chambers b 1767 Md, who married Reubin Thompson. This is the result of research that I have done since February 2007. Any corrections would be appreciated. Thanks to all who helped me with this family. Carol B. Miller Descendants of Samuel Chambers Generation No. 1 1. SAMUEL1 CHAMBERS was born 1670 in Anne Arundel Co Md, and died 11 Apr 1728 in Anne Arundel Co Md. He married ANNE SANDERS 23 Jul 1700 in Anne Arundel, Md1, daughter of JAMES SANDERS. She was born 1678, and died 14 Sep 1733 in Anne Arundel Co Md. Notes for SAMUEL CHAMBERS: Samuel CHAMBERS, All Hallows, AA, 7 F 1727-8, 11 Apr. 1728. To Wm. CHAPMAN, merchant, h/o dau. Rebecca, "Pratt's Neck" and "Herring Ck. Swamp", already in his possession; also lot # 33 in London Town, deeded 31 July 1718 by Hezekiah LINTHICUM. If son Nicholas pay 40 pounds to son Samuel at 21, "Bessington" & pt/o "Obligation", bought of Thomas Stockett,deed dated 14 Sept 1715; to Nicholas. To Turner WOOTEN, h/o dau. Agnes & to dau. Samuel Chambers and Richard Jones served as Justices of the Peace in Anne Arundel Co Md, as found in several documents. Test: Robert Neall, Mary Williams. 12.84 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------- Samuel lived in London Town on the South River in Anne Arundel Co Md, and appears to have been a tobacco planter and engaged in agriculture. Samuel Chambers, along with William Chapman, Turner Wooten, and Capt Anthony Beck are all listed as early members (before 1741) of the South River Club, said to be the first gentleman's club established in the United States. Notes for ANNE SANDERS: Was married first to Nicholas Gassaway. Nicholas was born 1669 Anne Arundel Md, d March 10, 1698/99 in Anne Arundel Co Md. His parents were NIcholas Gassaway and Anne (Hester) Besson. Their children were John, Hester, Jane, and Margaret Gassaway. Children of SAMUEL CHAMBERS and ANNE SANDERS are: 2. i. NICHOLAS2 CHAMBERS, b. 28 Feb 1701/02, All Hallows, Anne Arundel Md. 3. ii. AGNES CHAMBERS. 4. iii. REBECCA CHAMBERS. 5. iv. SAMUEL CHAMBERS. v. JANE CHAMBERS, m. ANTHONY BECK; d. 1749, At sea, Atlantic Ocean. Notes for ANTHONY BECK: Anthony was a sea captain who lived in London Town in Anne Arundel Co Md. He died at sea, as announced in the Maryland Gazette on 9-30-1749, on a voyage from Philadelphia to Holland and back in which he transported a group of Palentine settters, some of whom also died during the voyage. The ship was called the "Frances and Elizabeth". He was probably married twice, first wife being Elizabeth, daughter of Stephen West. May have had a son named Joseph, don't know by which marriage. A 1750 inventory of his estate exists in Maryland records. Generation No. 2 2. NICHOLAS2 CHAMBERS (SAMUEL1) was born 28 Feb 1701/02 in All Hallows, Anne Arundel Md. He married MARY JOHN2. Notes for NICHOLAS CHAMBERS: >From History of Cecil Co Md (1881) Page 450. Nicholas Chambers, Sr. was one of five men who bought land in North East for a parsonage, to be used at the convenience of a traveling preacher of the gospel, in or belonging to the Methodist church. This was probably the first such parsonage in Cecil County. it appears that the church was called "Ebenezer Chapel". Page 451. Nicholas Chambers Sr was also party to the purchase of another tract of land on which The Methodist Episcopal church was erected. It is unclear if this was Nicholas or a son, more likely a son. A Nicholas Chambers took the Oath of Allegience to the Revolutionary government in Cecil Co in 1778, same year that Jonas Chambers took the pledge. A Nicholas Chambers married Rebecca Brevard 3-05-1796 in Cecil Co Md. She was born 1750, daughter of Benjamin Brevard and Rebecca Alexander, and she died between 1797-1799. In 1815 Bishop Francis Asbury wrote in his journal that he stayed at the home of a Nicholas Chambers during a visit to Elkton in Cecil Co Md. CE 2nd District, p 2, MSA S 1161-3-8. 1/4/5/46 Probably a son: Notes on Maryland clergy: Chambers, Rev Nicholas; fl.1808; not further identified. >From Marriages and Deaths from the Maryland Gazette 1727-1839: Cook, Rev. James, minister of the Gospel, aged 60 years, and Miss Rebecca Chambers, aged 16, of Cecil Co, were married Thurs, evening, 22nd inst, by the Rev Nicholas Chambers. (Sept 29, 1808.) Notes for MARY JOHN: Will of David John dated 1768 Cecil Co Md names Jonas Chambers, son of "my sister Mary Chambers" as an heir. Jonas Chambers and Joseph Gilpin are executors. AGNES2 CHAMBERS (SAMUEL1) She married TURNER WOOTEN 01 Jan 1722/23 in St. Mary's Co. Md.. He was born 1695, and died 03 Nov 1760 in Prince George's Co, Md. Notes for TURNER WOOTEN: Was married three tmes, first to Agnes Chambers, then to Elizabeth Sprigg, then to Ann Jones. Children with Elizabeth Sprigg: William Turner, Thomas Sprigg, Richard, Singleton, and John Wooten. Elizabeth also married Josiah Wilson. A descendant of Turner Wooten, William Turner Wooten, b 1795 Prince George's Co Md (son of Turner Wooten and Mary Mackall Bowie) marred Margaret Hall in 1819. Margaret's parents were Francis McGruder Hall and Mary Hill. Francis was a descendant of the Richard Hall of Calvert Co Md family. Member of the South River Club. Administratrix: Ann Chambers. Child of SAMUEL CHAMBERS and ANN UKN is: i. DAUGHTER3 CHAMBERS. Generation No. 3 6. JONAS3 CHAMBERS (NICHOLAS2, SAMUEL1) was born 1741, and died Abt. 1813 in Probably Burke Co Ga. He married PRISCILLA JONES, daughter of ROBERT JONES and ELIZABETH. She was born 1746, and died 1816 in Screven Co Ga. Notes for JONAS CHAMBERS: Owned land in Cecil Co Maryland in 1760's until mid 1780's. Also paid taxes in Anne Arundel Co Md. Moved to Burke Co Ga by 1788.In 1789 he recorded a land plat for 750 acres. Owned land in Burke, Screven, and Washington Counties. Likely commanded a regiment in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War (implied in a letter written 9-12-1781 to the governor or the Council of Maryland).A Jonas Chambers was a lieutenant in Lord Dunmore's War of 1774. His mother was Mary John.The will of David John dated 1768 in Cecil Co Md named Jonas Chambers as an heir "son of my sister Mary Chambers". Executors were Jonas Chambers and Joseph Gilpin. David John named nephews John Ricketts and William Chambers and niece Agnes Black as heirs also. >From "Inhabitants of Cecil Co MD, 1774-1800: Chambers, Jonas obained a certificate of survey for tract Chambers' Sixth Discovery in 1774 (land patents index); took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778 (MS.1146); appeared on property tax list (12 white inhabitants in household) in 3rd Dist. in 1783 (tax list); deposed in 1781, age 39, in 1784, age 43, and in 1785, age 43 (Land Commisssions Book 3, pp 14, 26, 51.) Records of Washington Co Ga, Extant Surveyor's Records: McGee, Shadack date issued 7-05-1790, adjoining Jonas Chambers. Jonas drew in the 1805 Ga Land Lottery and is listed in the 1790 Reconstructed Census of Ga in Burke Co Ga. The names John Chambers and Robert Chambers also appear on some of Jonas's Burke Co Ga land plats. Jonas owned land near present day Providence in Cecil Co Md, which is about seven miles nw of Elkton between the Elk River and the Little Elk RIver. Adjacent to his property was that of Samuel Robinet (probable ancestor of my 2 great-grandmother Rachel Robinette). A Rowland Chambers owned land in the early 1700's in this area. He may be the same Rowland Chambers who was an early member of the Rock Presbyterian Church near Elkton. Also worth checking is the Ebenezer Methodist Church in Cecil Co which was founded by a Nicholas Chambers. Jonas's land in Burke Co Ga was in the Briar Creek area near the Screven Co line. Need to check the Richard Johns family line of Calvert Co Md. Richard had a son named Kensey. Children of JONAS CHAMBERS and PRISCILLA JONES are: 8. i. RACHEL4 CHAMBERS (JONAS3, NICHOLAS2, SAMUEL1) was born 03 Feb 1767 in Maryland, and died 03 Jan 1857 in Emanuel Co Ga, Thompson Family Cem.. She married REUBIN THOMPSON 1792 in Burke Co Ga. He was born 11 Jan 1765 in Bertie Co NC, and died 31 Dec 1855 in Emanuel Co Ga, Thompson Family Cem.. Notes for REUBIN THOMPSON: Reuben was a lieutenant in the Burke Co Ga militia. Family legend also says that he was a soldier at the Battle of Kettle Creek in Wilkes Co Ga at age 14. Reubin was a landowner in Burke Co Ga by 1788, owned land in Screven Co as well.May have had up to 3000+ acres before moving to Emanuel. Reubin received land in Montgomery/Emanuel Co due to distinguished military service, and legend is he was granted "all the land he could ride in a day.", which may have been up to 6000 acres. He and Rachel were instrumental in founding the Kemp community and in establishing a Methodist church, now known as Ebenezer, but was called Green Leaf Log Methodist Church when first built.
