Grace, The only proven information is his marriage to Martha Thigpen on Dec 1, 1811. This is where the lack of records is a problem. Most people give a birthdate of 1769 but this is based on his being of age in the early 1790's. I don't know of any proof of his actual birthdate. Where did you get 1764? As to a marriage or marriages before 1811, there is absolutely no proof that he married Elizabeth Braswell, this is family tradition and speculation based on his having a son named Kindred and his name on documents involving Braswells .Was she a daughter of Kindred and Rhoda Braswell? Their family records show no Elizabeth. Was she their daughter with a different first name? Maybe. Or was her name something else, not a Braswell at all? Possibly. There is also speculation as to whether Kindred, William, and Mary Darcy were his children. I think they were, but there is no proof. Possibly also, there may have been a third wife, either before Elizabeth or after her, but before Martha.
