Talked to a friend who is a volunteer at my local Family History Center. She said that the church is still actively doing extractions. She gave me the number for the Family History Support people - 1-866-406-1830. maybe we can bug them into putting these records on their list. Since these are public records, it is probably illegal to move them to private property. If that is where they are storing them (at a private site) then they are probably actually breaking some law by doing that. I don't know what kind of funding they get to maintain these records, probably not much. But I'm also pretty sure that they are legally responsible for maintaining them. It would be nice if they could at least let some group, such as the historical society, help organize and arrange these records. I think we need legal advice here! Carol B. The Emanuel County officials DO NOT CARE and obviously cannot be held accountable. Some of the books have been microfilmed but that still doesn't justify the deplorable condition of how they have housed the original documents. Will someone living in Emanuel County go see if the records are still in the vacated offices of Spivey, Carlton & Edenfield? Their offices were on the second floor of the old Citizens Bank Building, which I understand is now the City Hall. You will accomplish more by asking permission to get into the old offices rather than discussing their condition. You must understand that these "officials" do not care. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol MIller" <cmiller20@comcast.net> To: <gaemanue@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 10, 2010 2:36 PM Subject: Re: [GAEMANUE] Fwd: Emanuel County Historical Records >I think they should stay in Emanuel County, but I do agree that they need > better care.
