    3. Mary Lu, They need to be moved out of that courthouse.  It is evident that nobody there cares about those books or preserving them.  I wonder if Statesboro would be interested in shelving them?  I haven't thought to check with them. Michelle How about the members of the Emanuel County Historical Society get together and go straighten up that record room? I'd be very happy to help. 3. Hi all, I would be more than glad to come help as would several genealogy/ Historical society friends from my area.(south of Tallahassee Florida in Wakulla County) many of us have roots there, and are seeing the same situation repeated all over this area. Actually our Wakulla County Historical Society upon hearing about the problem volunteered to come and move the documents, but I don't think you want the records stored in a museum just south of Tallahassee Florida. I began the original question on this site as a cousin in Swainsboro had heard records had been moved and knew I was planning a trip there to do research. Please let me know if you decide to work on the issue, as I have ancestors and living family there and plan to be up that way in a bit to do research. Again would be glad to lend two more pair of hands to the work. I am Descendent of; Cook's, Daniel's, Lane's, Kirkland's to name a few. Linda D. Larkin Davis is not an uncommon name in the south. Here's a description of the naming order that may have been used by Joseph Davis: http://arms2armor.com/Genealogy/names1.htm and http://www.genealogy.com/35_donna.html And this one is even more interesting - http://www.hagcs.org/naming_patterns_and_customs.htm You also have to consider in some families who were Scots-Irish that they may have used a Scottish tradition: http://www.wakefieldfhs.org.uk/morayweb/naming traditions.htm I can't find the other naming tradition I've read about where the first born son is named after the father. It might havebeen referenced in the book "The Seeds of Albion", which is an interesting read. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His children that I have found so far are Lucretia, Francis and an unknown son who married Elizabeth....." and I remember why I thought Charles MIGHT be his father's name - it was based on the naming patterns of the boys and their birth orders. The first was named after someone who was a respected local politician, the second was named Charles, and the third boy was named after his wife's father, and the fourth was named after himself. This is consistent with one of the naming traditions of the south where the oldest is usually named after the paternal grandfather, the second after the maternal grandfather, and the third after the father. This differs from the tradition of naming the oldest boy after the father and the oldest girl after the mother, which is another naming pattern you typically see. Of course if someone did a big ! favour for you or saved your hide, or you wanted to show respect for them, you might start off naming your oldest boy after them, and then resume with the traditional naming order as it appears MIGHT have happened here. That this theory was confirmed by evidence from another person is terrific! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Olivia, I just realized that I have the wrong Jordan Flanders. You are talking about the one who married Sarah Thompson, aunt of Catherine, aren't you. The one I was thinking about wasn't born until 1851. I think the Jordan b 1793 is buried in the Sumner Cemetery. He married Reubin Thompson's and Rachel Chambers' daughter, Sarah, born 1800. He married Mary Daniel also (2nd wife, I think). Mary Catherine Thompson Flanders, b 1834, who is buried at Ebenezer, was the daughter of Reubin Thompson's son, Rev Robert Thompson, and his wife Mildred Amelia Beasley. She married Robert Smith Kitchen, who died in the Civil War, then she married Alexander Chestnut Flanders (b 1828 son of John Ruskin Flanders and Nancy Sumner). Alexander Chestnut Sumner first married Rachel Moxley and they were the parents of the Jordan who was born in born in 1851. John Ruskin Flanders b 1796 and (John) Jordan Flanders b 1793 were brothers, sons of Francis Richard Flanders and Nancy Jordan. I think I have all of this straight. 3.    Jordan (also spelled Jourdain or Jourden in various records) Flanders is said to be the Father of Methodism in Emanuel County, GA.  In 1821, he was a Land Lottery winner in Chason's District, and a Soldier in the Emanuel County Militia.  From May 25, 1840 to Jan 20, 1842, he was a Clerk of the Emanuel County Superior Court and Inferior Courts. He was an Officer of the Court of Ordinary from Mar 12, 1847 to Jan 12, 1852, and he began serving as Clerk of Inferior Court on Jan 10, 1854. He served as Emanuel County Tax Collector from Jan 12, 1857 to Jan 11, 1859.  According to the 1870 Emanuel County Census, he was a carpenter and preacher.  Between his two wives, Jordan fathered 20 children!    Although he is buried at the Sumner & Flanders Cemetery near Swainsboro, GA, there is also a monument in his memory located at Bethel Church Cemetery near Swainsboro.
