After all these years of searching poof! there it is :D I'll be visiting there again tonight after work. Thomas Stroud's claim was disallowed. Apparently you had to swear that no relative nor yourself served the CSA in any way shape form or fashion and since his brother John served from 1862 till May 1865, no go. Not sure if the Cptn Grubbs was "for real" or a fabrication, will check into that more. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I see it's a combo name. I"ve also just located documents at footnote.com showing Thomas Stroud making a claim for goods and livestock confiscated by Sherman's army Nov 1864 while he was serving as a private under a Captian Grubbs (Gibbs?) this is the first I've seen that Thomas Stroud served...the war between the states era has always fascinated me so I tend to gravitate towards that. He said she was short and petite but didn't take "nothin off nobody" she used to make him and other kids bring sand in from the yard and sweep the kitchen floor with it. I remember the sand in front of that house well, we liked to play in it when we were kids, the soft kind of sand you'd find in today's sandboxes. Daddy and his clan grew up there and he said the yard was sand for as long as he could remember. Didn't have to cut much grass that way :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great great Grandfather John Stroud was always just John. There has never been a middle name or initial, not in any census, not on his tombstone, not handed directly through my dad, his dad or his, all direct descendants of John Stroud. There was a John Joseph that was the son of either Thomas or James, John's brothers. But no, the John I speak of never had any middle name or initial. Sorry. Hi list, those of you with English ancestry the Yesterdays site, link is shown below, has been updated with all manner of documents contining the names of thousands of individuals from all over the British Isles, over varying centuries who appear on official documents. These records include Wills, School admissions, which in the majority of cases give a DOB, Apprenticeship records, Removal orders, the instrument for returning those chargeable on a parish to their parish of legal settlement, a Miscellany section plus many others. There are several references to America among the documents. If link fails, Google "Yesterdays Journey". mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm

She was raised by her grandmother, Rachel Stroud the daughter of John Stroud. Rachel was the sister of James Jackson Stroud and was present when Sherman came through. Jim Stroud m. Cula (?) Jim Stroud - son of James Jackson (Jack) Stroud (m. Lythan Stevens ) James Jackson Stroud son of John Stroud(1824-1890) & Susannah Drew Stroud. John Stroud (1824-1890) had 2 brothers James and Thomas Stroud, and possibly a sister Sarah. They were children of Thomas and Emilia Stroud, who were listed in Jefferson County in the 1820 census (I think it was 1820) Thomas and Emilia are my "brick wall" can't seem to find much about them. I learned that James Jackson was called Jack through my dad's cousins, one of which gave me a picture of the family, Jack is holding a baby in the photo. He was very tall , low brows deep set eyes and large hands. This picture also shows Jim at a younger age, maybe early 20's. I also have a picture of Jim with his 2nd wife and children. Jim was the father of the cousin that gave me the picture. I also have a ceramic cup that belonged to my great grandfather Jack Stroud. I wish there were more stories handed down through the family about John returning home from the war between the states. I've researched his unit as much as I can. I do know that he was captured at Mine Run Va in Nov 1863, but which prison he was sent to? Would have likely been Pt Lookout or Elmira. He was exchanged in Feb 1865 and paroled in Augusta GA May 1865. Now, how he got home to Emanuel county ? There's a good chance he walked and got rides here and there from traveling people. I imagine the RR was out in that area courtesy one Wm. T Sherman. I'd not heard the story about him coming home and having lice and keeping everyone at arm's length. but that would have not been surprising. I know the spot where his house stood, we used to go there often as children, we'd beg daddy to go to the "old place" one of which was his childhood home, which he tells me was once Jack Stroud's home. One of John and Susannah's boys was named Richard and his nickname was "dink" and the story was that he led the family and/or livestock to the "island in the woods" (in the direction of the promised land)to hide from the soldiers (sherman). Which can't be right because I think at the time, Dink was one of the younger children, if I'm not mistaken. In any case, I once sat in the crook of a tree that beloned to "uncle Dink" , and had a picture of it, which I have since lost track of. No, Hutcheson-Hall-Durden is where Moses Hutcheson and his family are buried. Old Hutcheson- is where Thomas Hutcheson and his family are buried....also believed that John and Sarah Mills Hutcheson are buried. There are a couple of Hutcheson childrens graves also, (1) infant of James Louis and Louisa Tyson Hutcheson, and Julia Hutcheson Cobb grown daughter of Aaron Hutcheson. So I beleive it started out as the Hutcheson family cemetery.
