Who did Sarah Matilda Cowart (1875-1902) marry and where is she buried, also something about her children? Sarah's parents were Curtis Cowart (1847-1902) and Emily Proctor (1845-1914). Thanks, Sue
Well, David Lamb wasn't my 7th grade English teacher ... it was 5th grade. I remember one day when I was sitting at the back of "A" row, talking with a neighbor. Mr. Lamb asked why I wasn't paying attention. Not wanting to get in trouble, I lied and told him that I couldn't see the board. Well, concerned teacher that he was, Mr. Lamb made arrangements for me to see an eye doctor ... and sure enough, I was badly in need of a pair of glasses! I don't think I ever lied to him again. I remember Mr. David Lamb very well; he was my 7th grade English teacher at Swainsboro Elementary. He was a good teacher and a very kind man. Mr. Lamb knew daddy, knew he was "sick" and occasionally asked about him. He saw a lot of good in a little girl from a poor, broken home and he always encouraged me to do my best. As I recall, he used to sit us in rows according to our class grades. It was a huge honor to get to sit in "A" row, especially if you got to seat in the first or second seats! Some FTM 2005 Ver. Features 1. Notes and Other records are accessed by clicking on EDIT button. The page has five selections, General, Notes, Medical, Addresses, and Options. I know the Notes and More are automatically printed in the genealogy rerport. I haven't tried printing the notes alone yet. I have made a note of the list comments. 2. Sources and Citations have 7 buttons to access a page for recording these. This is a new feature for FTM. The genealogy report has footnote numbers that refer to this information. The numbers are similar to generation numbers and it is a little confusing until you get use to them. 3. There is a Web Search button feature that is also new. Clicking on an individual Web Search button will activate an internet web search that will usually produce an endless list of potential sources for that individual. A friend of mine recommended the new version based on the Web Search and Source-Citation features and I have liked it too so far. I need to learn how to use and take advantage of all of the features. Recently, I took a quick trip to Old Canoochee Cemetery to look for a relative. As I was leaving, I spied a headstone with the name Inez Fortner. Since Fortner is one of my family names, out of curosity, I wrote her information down. Once home I flipped through my Fortner notebook. Low and behold! I saw a Romus Fortner, and listed next to his name was his second wife, Inez Randell! The clincher was her death date 1990 and burial at Old Canoochee. Turning the page I saw her obituary that I had found last summer which listed her surviving sons with the last names of Jones. Next to her, at the cemetery, was the headstone of Joseph W. Jones. Unfortunately, I did not record his dates. I'm satisfied now to go back to work after having a successful Spring Break! Her obituary: METTER-Mrs. Inez Randel Fortner, 70, died Saturday morning in Bulloch Memorial Hospital, Statesboro, after a long illness. The funeral was conducted at 3pm Sunday from Cedar Street Baptist Church. The Rev. James Hartley and Elder Tom Deal officiated. Burial was in Old Canoochee Cemetery near Twin City. The Emanuel County native had lived in Metter most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Joseph Jones of Brooksville, Fla., Johnny Jones of Metter and James Robert Jones of Alvareado, Tex.: four daughters, Jane McKinley, Gail Ansley and Adelia Rogers, all of Statesboro, and Judy Jones of Metter, a sister, Jewel Canady of Savannah; 19 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Kennedy Funeral Home of Metter had charge of arrangements. Printed in SFB 9-5-1990. These children are also listed in Romus' obit as his step-children. Apparently, he didn't have any children of his own. Does anyone know who Inez's parents were or anything else about her? Romus' first wife was a Dukes according to the following: METTER-Funeral services for Mrs. Romus Fortner, 55, were conducted today (Wednesday) at 4pm from the Metter Primitive Baptist Church with Elder V.F. Agan and Elder D. J. Newman officiating. Mrs. Fortner died in the Candler County hospital Tuesday morning after an illness of a few weeks. A native of Emanuel County, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Martha Wiggins Dukes and was a member of the Metter Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Romus Fortner of Metter; a son, Lewis Franklin Smallwood of Swainsboro; three sisters, Mrs. Regina Moore of Huntsville, Ala; Mrs. Luther Nasworthy Sr. of Swainsboro; a brother, D. Dukes of Opelika, Ala; and several nieces and nephews. Hooks Mortuary of Metter was in charge of arrangements. Printed in SFB 8-26-1964. Is anyone familiar with any of the people listed in these obits? Do you know what Romus' first wife's first name was? Would also like to know the dates for Romus. He was the son of James Milledge Fortner, son of Benjamin Griffin & Susan Elizabeth Meeks Fortner, son of James Toliver & Mary "Polly" Powell Fortner. His father, James M. Fortner, was married first to Dona Pearl Rogers? and second to Arlie Perry (all per Connie Page). I would also love to know more about Dona Pearl Rogers or Arlie Perry. Thanks for anything at all that you may have. Eva
