    1. Re: [GAEMANUE-L] Louisiana "Lucy" Anderson & Nelson W. Martin
    2. Olivia, I am not sure if either is buried there. I was told by the grand daughter of Josephine that most of the Cowarts that lived in the area are buried at Port Myaca. I was there looking for Elzsys grave but many are unreadable. I am pretty sure Josie is buried there. When I was there over a year ago I didn't know of the Cowart connection. Josie's grand daughter, Jackie, told me if I wanted to go over to Port Myaca to stop and get her and she would go with me. Port Myaca Cemetery is owned by the City of Pahokee. I spoke to a girl there and she was going to check and see if Elzy was buried there and get back to me. I am in Palm Beach for the week, so perhaps I will call the granddaughter and see if she has time to run over there. I would be very interested seeing some old pics she has. As you know I have been looking for a pic of Elzy. She is in her 70's. I will let you know what I find out if I go. Did you check out the 1930 Palm Beach (Canal Point) census? Elezy is there with my grandmother Mattie and the kids. Thompson is misspelled on the census but it is them. Also the Cowarts are listed. The E.L Cowart that gave info on Elzys death cert was Lewis Coward, Josie and R.E's son. Bobbie

    2. As some of you know my great grandmother was Mary Ella Martin. My grandfather, Elezer Alonzo Thompson was first married to a Cowart, then a Padet, then my grandmother, a Martin (Oliver) E.A's death cert info was given my E.L. Cowart, Canal Point FL 1932. I called Pahokee Fl and there was a Cowart living there, so I called her. She was quite elderly, but gave me the name and phone number of another Cowart family member. The older lady was the wife of Boliver Cowart, one of Josie' and R.E. Cowart's sons. Josie was the sister of E.A Thompson and the grandmother of the lady I spoke to last. She told me that all were gone and most were buried in the Port Myaca Cemetery, Pahokee, FL, Port Myaca Cemetery is not on line. This family of Cowarts can be found in the 1930 Palm Beach Fl, Canal Point I hope this info may be useful to some Cowart researchers Bobbie Thompson Connor

    3. Helena-Suzanne Thank you so much for your help. I would appreciate the 1930 Richmond County Census of Elmer Smith. Elmer is my uncle by marriage. I don't know when his parents died but I remember hearing that they died when Lola Mae was young and Uncle Elmer and Aunt Manie raised her. Oh! why didn't I listen and question when I was younger and all these people were alive????? Uncle Elmer and Aunt Manie moved to Augusta from Emanuel County about 1927. Their son, Elmer Doyle Smith, died Sunday, May 15, 2005 and in checking my records, I have absolutely no information on Uncle Elmer. Any help will be wonderful and I thank you so much. 3. My Calhouns came down from VA to NC to SC, then to GA. Although my own line settled in Montgomery County in the early 1800s, the Jefferson County ones are related to them. I have several letters written in 1949 that were in my great-grandpa Calhoun's things, and these tie many of them together. Grandpa was a genealogist, too! Wish he were here now so I could talk to him. Thanks for your help, Dawn. 3. HALL, B. MSS. The Hall, B. mss., 1815-1838, consist of 169 sketches made in North America with the Camera Lucida in 1827-1828, by Basil Hall, 1788-1844, naval officer and author, and correspondence, 1815-1838. The sketches are of scenes, buildings, and persons made in Canada and the United States. The United States sketches depict parts of New York state, including Niagra Falls; parts of Massachusetts; scenes in the Southern states, east of the Mississippi River; and scenes on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Forty of these sketches appear in Hall's Forty etchings from sketches made with the Camera Lucida in North America in 1827 and 1828. Edinburgh, Cadell & Co., 1829, which also contains a map of Hall's itinerary (Lilly E165 .H15). Nine of the sketches are reproduced in the first volume of Roscoe Carlyle Buley's The Old Northwest: pioneer period, 1815-1840. Indianapolis, Indiana Historical Society, 1950 (Lilly F484.3 .B94 1950). The eight personal letters by Basil Hall, 1815-1838, and a fragment of a letter by Mrs. Margaret (Hunter) Hall, 1799- 1876, accompanied by typewritten transcripts, are mounted and bound with an engraved portrait and biographical sketch of Basil Hall. Nine of the sketches appear in Mrs. Margaret (Hunter) Hall's, The Aristocratic Journey. London, G.P. Putnam's Son, 1931 (E165 .H188). Collection size: 178 items For more information about this collection and any related materials contact the Manuscripts Department, Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405 -- Telephone: (812) 855-2452.

    3. Excerpts from "Travels in North America in the Years 1827 & 1828" by Captain Basil Hall, Royal Navy During his trip to North America in 1827-28, Captain Basil Hall, along with an Indian agent, traveled to "the country of the Creek Indians" and describes in great detail a "grand ball-play" and all the accompanying ceremonies. Describing the action of the game, Hall writes "…the Indian who got hold of the ball…with thirty or forty swift-footed fellows stretching after or athwart him, with their fantastic tigers’ tails streaming behind them…(he) sometimes tumbling at full length…but never losing hold of his treasure without a severe struggle…These parts of the game were exciting in the highest degree and it almost made the spectators breathless to look at them." Captain Hall illustrated his accounts of his travels with a camera lucida, a device invented in 1807 that allowed an artist to trace the outline of an object by means of a prism that projected its image onto a piece of paper or canvas.
