This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Cc.2ADI/661.1 Message Board Post: found online: Town of Kite, Johnson Co., Georgia Kite was named for Shaderick Kight who donated the land for the town. He requested the simpler spelling of his name to facilitate mail delivery. The Kite Museum, in the former Masonic Lodge (1890), relates the history of the Kite community. Originally the second floor was used by the Masons and the first floor was used as the community center. Kite is a village with a population of 297 in 1990. It is located 12 miles WNW of Swainsboro and on the Ohoopee River. Johnson County was named for Herschel Vespasian Johnson, governor and U.S. senator, who had just completed a term as governor of the state of Georgia. Johnson was a strong advocate of state's rights who wanted to preserve the Union. Following the county being named in his honor, he accepted the nomination as Stephen A. Douglas's vice-president. The move was highly criticized throughout the state. Acquisition: Creek Land Cession of November 1, 1783 Taken from: Emanuel County, Georgia, Laurens County, Georgia, and Washington County, Georgia. Communities in Johnson County include Wrightsville (county seat), Kite, and Adrian. The county seat of Wrightsville was named for James B. Wright, a member of the committee that selected the site for the town.

Another "pearl" from my friend. This obit gives the maiden name of Mrs. Frank L. Covennah, as Mittle Lou FIELDS. It also provides the spouse of their daughter, Martha/Mitter Covenah. She married J. L. Richardson (sp?) of Surrency. You will note the obit says James Bennett Covena was buried in the Fields Cemetery but the cemetery book does not record this grave. ================================================= Swainsboro Forest Blade, 12/23/1937 Funeral rites for James Bennett Covena, age 56, were at the graveside in Fields Family cemetery, near Blundale, at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, with Rev. C. A. Jorden, officiating. Swainsboro Funeral parlor was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Covena died sometime during Sunday night. Mr. Leonard Lamb, a neighbor went to Mr. Covena's home early Monday morning. Failing to get a response to his knocks and finding the door locked, Mr. lamb went around the house to arouse Mr. Covena, if he was still asleep. He observed an open window to the bedroom and saw Mr. Covenah laying on the floor, who failed to answer his calls. Mr. Lamb broke in the door and went to the bedroom and found Mr. Covena to be dead. Mr. Lamb informed neighbors and relatives of what he had observed. Since there were not eye witnesses to the incident, Coronor Charles A. Coleman was called in and he summoned a jury, who investigated and reported a verdict that the deceased came to his death by reason of "heart failure." He was born in Jefferson County but had spent practically all of his life in Emanuel County, where he was engaged in farming. Mr. Covena was a son of the late Frank Covena and Mittie Lou Fields Covena. He is survived by one brother, N. H. Covena, of Swainsboro; two sisters, Mrs. J. L. Richerson of Surrency, and mrs. T. A. Canady of Garfield, besides a large family connection in this and adjoining counties.
A special person sent this info to me. I would be happy to provide her name but I don't want to volunteer her for lookups. (grin) SWAINSBORO FOREST BLADE 03/16/1911 Mr. Frank Covena, living on Mr. J. D. Smith's place, about three and a half miles from Swainsboro, was almost instantly killed by a fence clamp, which slipped off the end of the wire last Thursday, striking him on the right side of the head and crushing in his skull. Death followed within about twenty-eight hours after he received the blow. Mr. Covena leaves a wife, having been married only two months. Besides his wife, he leaves his father, two brothers and four sisters to mourn his death. Frank had started life with all in his favor, and it is sad to see a life so full of promise taken so suddenly but the All wise Father knows best. He was buried at the family burying ground near Smithton last Saturday. Mrs. Covena was Miss Annie Canady before her marriage.
