    3. First Generation 1. James E. WARREN son of Eleazer WARREN and Jane HENDLEY was born on 10 Jun 1858 in Emanuel Co., Georgia. He died on 5 Sep 1885 in , , Georgia. Posted by Dawn Cannady Williams: THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION September 11, 1885 GEORGIA GOSSIP INDULDGED IN BY COUNTY PAPERS. An assassination is reported from Swainsboro on Saturady night, which resulted in the killing of James E. Warren. Mr. Warren was a well to do farmer, and on Saturday evening he went to carry corn to a mill in the neighborhood and returned home just after dark, and after stabling his horse started to his dwelling, and as he reached the lot gate was fired upon by a hidden assassin and fell to the ground, and only lived to say, "Oh, Lord". His wife heard the report of the gun and the cry of her murdered husband and ran out to where he lay dead. The murderer had fled: and she was alone with four small children. They went to the nearest neighbor and reported the death of their father, and they gathered at the house of the dead man. The coronor was summoned and on Sunday an inquest was held. Dr, Green Bell made a post mortem examination, and so close was the gun that the shot never scattered, all going in a lump, the wad itself entering into the man's body. The evidence failed to give even a clue to the murder, and the jury rendered a verdict that the deceased came to his death by the hand of an unknown party. Excitement runs high, and the lack of evidence is all that prevents a lynching. James married Agnes DASHER on 6 Apr 1873 in Emanuel Co., Georgia. Agnes was born on 21 Mar 1854 in Georgia. It was built in its present location in 1877, and attended by the Thompson, Beasley, Flanders, Kitchens, Youngblood, Durden, and several other families of the area. Most of the folks buried there were related to these families. The Reubin Thompson Family Association helps to upkeep the church. Marilyn Lear is the historian for the Association, but is temporarily off this mailing list. You can find the cemetery listings at the Emanuel Co genweb site. Carol B.
