    2. Tara: I looked in the 1880 census listing for Emanuel--there were no 1890 as most were burned--and did not find your Jack Delaney; however, I finally found a J. Delaney (born 1862 and 38 years of age, born in Georgia) in the 1900 Emanuel County Census, 53rd Militia District, visit 332, page 74, with a wife Addie and one female child, Gertrude, age 2. It states he had been married to her only 3 years. Hope this helps. Anita

    3. I try to read them as they were categorized in 1830 - makes it a little easier to figure them out. Having said that, watch I'll be wrong. -----Original Message----- From: CannadyGal1@aol.com [mailto:CannadyGal1@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 10:33 AM To: GAEMANUE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GAEMANUE-L] confusion in 1820 census categories I read "somewhere" concerning the 1820 census, that some in the household were actually counted twice, due to how the age brackets were written. The 1820 columns read Males Under 10 == Males 10 to 16 == Males 16 to 18 == All Males 18 to 26 == Males 26 to 45. Example: If the household had a male 16 or 18 he could have been counted twice. If the head of household was 26, he could have been listed twice. Because of this confusion, the next census, 1830, categories read: Males under 5 = Males 5 to under 10 = Males 10 to under 15 ... etc. It's kind of self-explanatory but I would still like to find the source about this head count confusion? 1. Census Look Up
    2. Tara D. Fields
    3. If anyone has access to census records, I've been looking for Jack Delaney, father of Annie Mae (married Fields) and Elmore Delaney. Jack was born about 1860 and died after February 04, 1898. He was married to Emma Hall Delaney (August 10, 1868-August 19, 1896). She is buried in Hall Cemetery in Emanuel. I don't know what happened to him after his wife died. I know that Emma's sister Georgia H. E. Hall (wife of John J. Faircloth) ended up raising her kids (2 kids that I know of - a third died in a fire). I've checked the census records that are online at the USGenWeb. The 1880 Census is only partially done. That census might be my best bet. 1890 might pan out, as well. My local historical library doesn't have the census records for counties outside of my own area. :-( Thanks. Tara --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. As I have researched this story on the Wiggins' encounter with Sherman, it's been difficult to determine the exact facts of the story. I've added more to the story in recent months on the website. I've also discovered someone who has conducted detailed research on people who went along with Sherman's army during the march. I've been able to make some educated guesses based on this info. My best guess for now is that Sarah Wiggins and her girls went along willingly and played the part of Union loyalists. I believe this was an attempt to save what she could of her assets and provide cover for her sons. George and William Wiggins hid out in the Prong Creek swamp with the livestock until the army was gone. I grew up on that property and spent many days in those swamps along the creeks and even in modern times, it's not a nice place to hid out. I've also received some stories of George and John Wiggins hunting turkeys in th! is area that are interesting. They come from a relative who died in the 70s but left a video tape interview with one of my cousins. I plan to transcribe it and post it on the website when I get the time.
