From Ancestry.com Satellite Images by Scott Aaron I thought I'd share a process that I use for locating ancestors property with satellite images. If you have a high speed internet connection and a fairly current PC, you can download a great satellite image program called Google Earth. It's about a 9MB download (free) available at: http://desktop.google.com/download/earth/ Among the many visually amazing features of this program is a tool where you can overlay images on top of satellite photos. As soon as I saw this feature, it hit me--"plat maps!" I imported a plat map image on top of a satellite photo of the area where my ancestors lived in 1920, and just like that I was looking at a photographic map of where my ancestors' property would be located today. The program lets you adjust the size, orientation, and best of all, the transparency level of the imported image, so you can make the map match the roads, rivers, etc. of the satellite image and then you simply drag the transparency guide back and forth to toggle between the map and the satellite image to see where property would be located today. *************************************************** Carol's note: I haven't figured out where to find plat images to import, but once we figure it out, this could be very useful. Kelden and I have had lots of fun playing around with the program. ____________________________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

Surnames: Bird, Brown, Walker, Ellenwood, Harvey, Cooper, Wilson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Cc.2ADI/666.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Dee: I have an obituary for a cousin (that I never knew - it was in My Aunt Sally Brown Wiggins Dowell's Bible). His name was Monroe Brown, of Rt. 3 Metter, GA, - his wife is listed as "Emma Bird Brown" of Metter, GA. She would have been my first cousin as well - but, I never knew this side of my family and I am sure that there is a great deal of age difference. My father was the 10th child born to Willie L. & Lizzie Walker Brown, Tattnall County, GA (and surrounding counties like Candler, Appling, Toombs). My father's brother was the father of this " Monroe Brown". Monroe Brown's father would be a W. Lennis Brown, of Candler County, GA. But, again - I don't know much about this group. I hope that this has been of some help. I am researching my paternal grandmother, Lizzie Walker Brown. I am looking for her burial site or obit or something that could help me locate her burial site. She died soon after the birth of my father, in Sept 1923. ( He passed away when I ! was 12 -so I am still researching) Also, It appears that Aunt Sally had cut the actual date out when cutting the obit from the newspaper. Kindest Regards, Liz Brown Burks mandlburks@corrcomm.net Alabama Resident

thanks Delores. I never thought of that. Still new to this research. I keep hearing references to "The Rich Settlement" Is this something that is documented somewhere? Is there historical books refererring to the Rich Settlement? My gut tells me I have a relation with the Hall-Rich line...I just can't figure it out.....probably never will.... When the 1860 Census was taken, Henry Houston Hall had already married Sarah Rich. They were living in household #241 in the Rich settlement. The husbandless Elizabeth was living in household #239. My assumption is that Elizabeth had gone to live near her ?brother? and perhaps was able to pick up some farm, household or seamstressing work in that area to help support herself and her children. I have not located Fereby/Phariaba Hall in the 1860 Census but in 1870 she is with her son John K. Hall near Summertown. Delores

Carol, I had never found the family in 1870. Malcombe (Malcom - which spelling is correct?) was in Jefferson Co in the 1880 census, Wadley district, living next door to his father Juniper Hall Jr. He was a widower, and Sarah was not listed, apparently already married to this John Atkinson. These Pope children were no longer living with the family either. Who were they, does anyone have any idea? Great job Carol!!! You've solved two mysteries for me. I now know who Sarah Hall (sister of Malatha) married. Since she is in Jenkins County in 1910, she must live near her sister Malatha Hall Roebuck. I can now stop trying to figure out who this "nephew" John Atkinson is. That too has puzzled me for a long time. Can't make out the name--looks like Harrage but can only be sure of the H. Was male, white, 15 or 25 years of age, railroad labor. Sorry I can't do better than that--I even used a magnifying glass and it didn't help.
One of the best research sites I have found is the Godfrey Memorial Library in Middletown, CT URL: http://www.godfrey.org/. It is a subscription site, but it only costs $35 per year. You can sign up online and pay with a credit card, or you call the phone number they provide and give them a credit card number over the phone, or you can print out the registration form and mail it in with your check or credit card info. Your Godfrey Scholar membership gives you access to Heritage Quest including their census images and books online, to several different historic newspaper collections online including the Atlanta Constitution 1868-1925, to the PERSI Index, immigration and passenger lists, SSDI, and so very much more. You can search by surname, by state, or by collection. I have found it to be an extremely valuable resource that I use often.
