I have a Mathew C. Coleman, 1st Corporal, Co. H, 48th GA Infantry, killed in action at Sharpsburg, Md, on 17 Sep 1862. I have a Matthew Coleman, Sergeant, Co. C, 38th GA Inf, killed in action at Sharpsburg, Md., on 17 Sep 1862. Can someone tell me definitely if these are two separate people, or the same person. If the same, why are they listed as "killed in action" for two separate Confederate units? Thanks. Mike Ridgdill Twin City, GA
Thank you so much for pointing out my error in typing Georgia's death date. I thought I read my message closely but at that time of night, I guess my brain was not registering. I would appreciate a copy of the Obituary of Georgia M. Collins who died December 30, 2005. Her obituary was in the January 2, 2005 edition of the Lakeland paper - THE LEDGER. If anyone in that area has access to the paper, I would be so grateful. Gloria Kahrs
It is my understanding (from the Lawson family) that Sarah Wyatt died before 1836, and those three children were born to his second wife, who remains unknown. I don't know this for sure, and I don't know how the family has come to that conclusion, nor do I know how to check on her prior to 1850. In the 1850 Jefferson County census, Albert P. and Rebecca are living three doors away from a Wyatt family: William 43, who is probably a brother to Sarah, Martha 65 (probably her mother), Sarah 22, and William I., 1; this Sarah is probably a daughter of William and the baby her son. Here are further notes and information about Charles Mathew Coleman's war record. Marilyn Lear In the marriage record, he was called "of Johnson County." He enlisted in Company H, 48th Regiment Georgia Infantry, as a Private on March 4, 1862. He received a disability discharge on April 26, 1862 at Charleston, SC. He also served in Savannah as Georgia and Carolina built their defenses. He then enlisted in Company G, 32nd Regt. Georgia Infantry. He married Calsie soon after returning from the war. On August 3, 1907 in Emanuel County, he applied for a Civil War pension, which was later granted. Charles's grave is marked as a Mason. His obituary states he was licensed to preach for over 40 years and was active at Ebenezer Church. He and his wife are buried at Coleman Chapel. [SFB 1916] Information on his descendants was taken largely from The Colemanac 1750-1976, by Arthur Clinton Coleman and the federal census. 1880: Charls M. This Emanuel Co List seems to be a very active and smart group, so I'm hoping one of you can give me the answer I'm seeking: Exactly where is the PIKES PEAK CEMETERY? I have death certificates that show it was used in the 1920s-30s, & supposed to be near Millen in Jenkins Co, GA. I'm a BRINSON-DURDEN-DEKLE family researcher. ~Thanks, SSchaeff
Where is the courthouse in swainsboro? How do I go about looking up the original birth ledgers for 1892? Linda Jacksonville, FL
The new courthouse is located at the corner of US Hwy 1 and Moring Street. There is plenty of parking in the back, accessable from Moring St. I've never heard of the courthouse having birth ledgers. They have birth certificates on file, but birth certificates weren't required in Georgia until the early 1900's. I'm not sure, but I don't think the public has access to birth records until they are over 75 years old. Maybe someone else can elaborate on that. Hope this helps.
