Thanks Olivia and Yvonne. Yvonne, It does look more like an S to me. But on some of the deeds I have seen some letters that look even more live "S_ that I know were "L's". So I guess right now it's a toss-up. Unless someone has a good idea who this person might have been. Olivia, In such case, would he be listed on the document as the landowner? Carol, my guess is that it's S. Thompson because the S looks like most of the other S's in the document. For instance the word Survey. There's a superscript after the S before Thompson. I'm not sure what it stands for, but I know it's a way to abbreviate a name. I noticed that there is something similar following the word Survey in "Survey d June 10th 1796." which you transcribed as a d. S with superscript d could stand for the word "said," as in Said Thompson, referring back to previous mention. S with superscript d could also stand for a name. S....?...d Thompson. That's my 2 cents worth; I'm no expert by any means at old handwriting. I'll be very interested to hear what others think. Two of Reubin Thompson's deeds can be found at the Virtual Vault website: http://content.sos.state.ga.us/. I would like anyone who is interested to look at the one dated 2-04-1796. Reubin is bordered on one side by a Thompson. It looks sort of like an S - "S Thompsons". However, it could be an L or some other initial. If you know anyone who is particularly good at figuring out old initials, please ask them to take a look at it. This could be, I think, Labon Thompson, but I'm not sure. There are also some deeds for Labon at the site, but I can't find one that borders Reubin. They are, however, near where his was located. Any help appreciated. Here is the body of the deed: Warrant dated February 4th 1796. There are two plats listed at Crumpton's plats for Rubin Thompson dated 6-6-1785, located in the Brier Creek area of Burke Co, the area where Reubin Thompson, b 1-11-1765, resided. Rubin Thompson is also listed as an adjacent landowner on a 7-06-1784 plat. Reubin b 1765 would have been twenty years old at the time of the 1785 plats, and nineteen at the time of the 1784 plat. My question is, if Reubin was twenty years old, could he legally have been a landowner? Carol B. Miller
Marilyn and Carol, Bingo! We hit the jackpot. Today I received the death certificate of William Howard Roberts, husband of Georgia Sharpton. He was born Jan 27, 1922 and died Jan 8, 1980 in Auburndale, FL at Morrow Memorial Hospital. He was buried in Green Pond Cemetery, Polk County, FL. His parents were Hiram Albert and Eliza Jane Roberts. I would appreciate a copy of his obituary if anyone has access to the Lakeland papers. I have had no response to letters written to the person who gave Georgia's information on her death certificate or the funeral home who handled her arrangements. Anyway, I wanted to bring you up to date. Collins is still a mystery. Gloria
Thanks Mary Ann. Now all I need do is find time to go there. Hello list, Here is some information on the Walker family of Burke Co Ga. Back in 2003 there was some brief discussion of this family on this list, so I am hoping some of you can help me. In Feb 2007 I posted some deeds that I found for my 3great-grandfather Reubin Thompson in Burke and Screven counties. One of them involved a sale of 200 acres of land in Burke Co from Reubin Thompson and his wife Rachel Chambers to Charles Kimball. I have learned that this Charles Kimball was probably the son of Charles and Diana Kimball of NC. The son Charles was born in NC but moved to Burke Co Ga by abt 1786. In a 1786 deed, Reubin Thompson and John Michael Burkhalter were chain carriers for 200 acres of land that Charles Kimball bought in Burke Co. The land at this time was vacant all around. This deed puts Reubin Thompson in Burke County by 1786. I also found a listing at Compton's Plats that says he was an adjacent landowner on a 1787 deed in Burke Co, though I don't know if a record of his land deed still exists, or when he purchased it. Information that I have found on Charles Kimball show that he was born abt 1750 in N.C., and married Anne Walker, daughter of James Walker and Mary Sanders of Prince William Co Va. They had sons Walker, Jeremiah, and Charles. Charles married Rebecca Murray of Burke Co Ga, daughter of Stephen Murray. Anne's brothers were Rev Sanders Walker of Wilkes Co Ga and Rev Jeremiah Walker of Elbert Co Ga. Rev. Jeremiah Walker died in Elbert Co in 1806, and in his will he left abt 700 acres of land "on the north side of the Savannah River" to his sons, land he purchased from Robert Chambers. I think this Robert Chambers was probably a son of my 4great-grandfather Jonas Chambers. I'm wondering if the land was in Burke Co. I have found plats for Rev Sanders Walker in Burke Co and figure that Jeremiah also owned land in the area. The Kimball land plats were adjacent to some Thompon ones. In 1791 Charles Kimball purchased 200 acres of land in Burke Co bounded by Stephen Murray, William Sapp, and John Bell (who also bounded Jonas Chambers' land). Also, Jane Tweedy and by Oglesby. In an 1822 deed for 230 acres he was bordered on two sides by "Mrs. Thompson", by Anthony Mills, and by Martin Herrington, also by Addison Sapp. All of this land - Kimball, Chambers, Thompson - was in the southwestern part of Burke Co near the Screven Co border, in the Brier Creek area and just over the line from the Millhaven plantation. I am looking for information on the children of Jonas Chambers and on the relationship of Reubin Thompson to these families mentioned in the plats. I have noticed that the Nicodemus Thompson family and the Murray family passed through Bertie Co NC on their way to Burke Co Ga. I also noticed that Bertie Co is given as the birthplace of Anne Watkins Douglass, wife of Reuben Wilkinson who was a witness to some of the Thompson/Chambers deeds. Reuben's sister Sarah was married to Seaborn Jones who owned land adjacent to Jonas Chambers and also appears on some of the deeds. Thanks for any help or ideas about these families. Carol B. Miller
Thanks, Mary Ann. Take care. Mike
Hooks Cemetery is located between Twin City and Garfield off Hwy. 23 near or in the general area of Mincey Road. I have also seen on a railroad map "Hooks Crossing" in this area. Mary Ann

In Treutlen County near Soperton there is a Hooks Cemetery on Cemetery Road. Cemetery Road branches off CR-183 to the east. It is also located south of I-16. On I-16 take the exit for U.S. 221 south, then CR-183 (County Road 183) north then turn east on Cemetery Road. The Hooks Cemetery is at the end of the road. Or at least this is what I found on GOOGLE. All I know is they lived in the viciniity of Garfield, according to "Salt of the Earth" by Dorothy Woodell Woods, 1981. His wife Nancy Missouri Burt Hooks' death certificate says she was living at Summit (Twin City) at the time of her death on October 2, 1926.
