In Emanuel Memories on page 35 is a map approximating the routes Sherman's troops took through Emanuel County. The one Mary Ann referenced would be the 17th Corps along the Old Savannah Road. Another line shows the 15th Corps entering the county on the western side near Blundale, traveling south to Dellwood, east to just north of Modoc (along the road where my family lived) then on to Canoochee, then Garfield. You could be right about Jane being Henrietta's sister, Dawn, since apparently she had a sister that same age named Jane. But I believe Esdy was a child of Solomon and Henrietta. The reason I think that is Henrietta did have a sister named Eady, as well, but she was born she was born in 1837, married and had a family. I personally knew a daughter of Eady (Eady, born 1856) and interviewed her about her family. Emanuel County already has one marker of the Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails  about Sherman's route to the sea at the junction of Hwy 56 north of Summertown and Old Savannah Road---like going to McKinney's Pond. It was dedicated 3-4 years ago.   The second marker will be near the junction of Hwy. 1 north and Coleman Lake Road near the Jefferson County line.   Mary Ann Smith

Yes, thank you, Mike. I dtold id some research last night and read many accounts of the story, and I now know it to be true, but of course, quite differently from the one we received on this List. I love history, and I am 100% in favor of history preservation, but I don't think the truth is popular these days (and to me, history should always be a factual statement of events). Apparently the sign will be erected with the story on it depicting the incident exactly as in the account sent to this List by the Augusta gentleman. If that is the case, I wouldn't bother to drive a mile to see such rubbish! (Wonder when they will start eerecting monuments in the South honoring and glorifying William T. Sherman? I understand that the attitude towards him is even changing!)
