    1. [GAEMANUE] More on Bolling Hall
    2. Carol Miller
    3. Bolling's death date is apparently 4-10-1904, as taken from his Florida pension records, filed by his widow Hester J.Wynn (Winn) Hall. I don't have a copy but Jimmy's notes contain this information. The correct speling of his name is also up for debate, because it is spelled several different ways. In Juniper Sr's will it is Bowling, in some records it is Bolling, but in this letter that he wrote it is Bolen. Also, the article gives 16 children. I have fifteen, though some were born in Florida, and thus didn't actually make the trip from Ga in 1861. Is the 16th the William from the 1860 Emanuel Co Ga census? Does anyone have a marriage date for Bolling and Mary Ann? Carol

    3. I finally found a message about the Bolling Hall family that Jimmy Hall sent me about a year ago. There's some interesting stuff. >From a newspapaer article in the Bradford Co Telegraph 3-17-1977: "Bolen Hall Came to Bradford County in 1861 Driving Ox Cart With Wife and Sixteen Children" Most families came in the "large economy size" a hundred years ago, when food was cheap, most of it grown on the farm, and the more "hands" a man had around the house, the more help he had in planting and harvesting his crops. Such was the case of Bolen Hall who came here in 1861 - the first year of the Civil War - driving an ox cart down from Georgia with his wife and sixteen children. It is believed that this Bolen Hall was the great uncle of Lynn and Nathan Hall of Hampton, since they remember having an uncle by the same name, who lived in an area east of U S 301 and south of Hampton in the vicinity of the Santa Fe Fire Tower. Since Bolen is an unusual name, they think it likely that the Bolen with sixteen children was the fater of Bolen, their uncle, who had only the average number of two or three offsprings. In an interesting letter written in 1887 to an early Starke Real Estate firm, Gardiner & Pratt, and published in an advertising booklet they distributed to prospective buyers in other states, Mr Hall attests to the healthful climate of Bradford County and the productivity of the soil. The fact that he reared 16 children "behind the plow" and lived to count 88 children and grandchildren would seem to bear out his claims. (dated March 22d, 1887 Starke, Fla) The letter was as follows: Messrs Gardiner & Pratt, Starke Florida, You wished me to tell you about my Florida experience, and now I do so. I came to Starke, Bradford County, Florida in 1861 from Georgia in an ox cart with my wife and sixteen children. I had in my possession only fifty dollars in money and provisions tht would last us about sixty days. I settled near Lake Navarre, which was then called Little Sante Fe Pond (editors note: and is now known as Hampton Lake) and set to work to make a living out of the soil. One by one my children got married, and by raising cattle and hogs, and by growing corn and sea island cotton I accumulated all that I possess today. I now have living eight-eight children and grandchildren. One of my daughters has fifteen chldren and two other have fourteen each.During the twenty-six years of my residence in this neighborhood I have never had the chills or malarial fever in my family, and my childrens families have also been free from the same diseases. Altogether I have never paid out $25 in doctors' bills. I came to this state for my health, supposing I had consumption. I hav entirely regained my health and I have not taken a dose of medicine during twenty years. I have lost only four out of my entire family of eight-eight, and these met their deaths from accidental causes. We now have twenty-three farms and orange groves, and over 1000 head of cattle. We raise our own hog meat and chickens, and frequently sell a quantity of both. WE also raise our own sugar and syrup besides sweet potatoes, vegetables of all kinds, as well as peaches, with what we receive for the surplus of our crops we are now able to save considerable money yearly. I am, respectully BOLEN HALL Carol B. Miller

    2. It is spelled McRae. I don't know if ya'll have this information but just thought I would pass it along away. McRae was not just a store and a post office, however. Many of the early settlers stayed on to build homes - such as the more than 100 year old house you pass at the corner of Highways 315 and 214, originally built by Mr. Hall. Riley Glisson built and ran a saw mill, cotton gin and grist mill at nearby Gold Head Branch. Mr. G.W. Hall was the county's official surveyor, and Mr. E.D. Prevatt was the school teacher. Descendants of these men - and of other early community leaders - are still part of McRae and of Clay County. {_http://www.clay.k12.fl.us/mre/history_of_mcrae.htm_ (http://www.clay.k12.fl.us/mre/history_of_mcrae.htm) } HALL, JAMES JACKSON, Pvt. _2nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry_ (http://www.spanamwar.com/2ndGeorgia.htm) , Co. C. I welcome corrections or additions. I am not sure how or even if Lyman Hall is connected to my Branch. Guess I need to do some research. I am going to get down to McRae and take some pictures of the Hall House and Hall Lake in the next week or so. There are a few pictures of the tombstones at: _http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GScid=72015&GSln=Hall_ (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GScid=72015&GSln=Hall) not very good. I will also get there and take pictures of the family. Linda **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. 3. Yes, I remember him, as well, although I'd never heard that story. I would think the church and cemetery would be Mount Shady. I thought he lived on the Swainsboro-Vidalia Road (now 297) in the Wilkes settlement. I remember Mr. Zin's high-pitched voice; his grandson, Bernard, talks the same way now. Bernard's parents, Charlie and Vergie, were good to talk with, too; they knew a lot of history. Wish I could still go and talk to all the old folks who have now gone on. So many had a wealth of knowledge of our ancestors and local places; but that knowledge has died with them. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bo Mosley" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 09, 2008 8:44 AM Subject: [GAEMANUE] Mr Zin Hall > Olivia, > Sometime in the mid 1950's my father and I went to visit Mr. Zin Hall as > he > was a friend of my Father. 3. Olivia, Sometime in the mid 1950's my father and I went to visit Mr. Zin Hall as he was a friend of my Father. He lived on the Normantown road in a small house that was unpainted. He told us the story about when he thought he was going to die. He said that he had been to Vidalia and was walking home at night after consuming some alcohol and passed by a church and Cemetery on his left. He thought that he was about to die so he went over to the cemetery and dug himself a grave and crawled in to die. He awoke the next morning, Sunday when people began to come to Church. He crawled out of his grave and walked on home. Mr. Zin was a pleasure to talk with and he knew a lot of history of the people and area. 3. Dick, Here is the 1880 LDS census for Lyman: Precinct 7, Clay Co Fl. Liman N Hall 54 farmer, wife Elizabeth H Hall 50, George W son 26 planter, Matilda daughter 22, Ellerenia dau 21, Elizabeth dau 17, John son 15, Edaline dau 13, Liman son 10, Katie dau 8, Charitie Dau 6 ,Hardy Norton 25 Farm Laborer. So George is living in the household, and Charity is listed as a daughter. Of course Charitie may have been a granddaughter, George is twenty years older than Charity, certainly old enough to be her father. Did it give his wife's name, and a death date? 1. [GAEMANUE] More on Cyrus Hall
    2. Carol Miller
    3. This should be included with Cyrus' information, posted back in 2002 by Bill Cherapy - Cyrus served in the Firsr Florida Reserves, Co K. He enlisted 1/29/1864 at Madison. He was absent on detached service in Tallahassee on the last roll and was paroled 5/16/65 at Madiscon. He was 5'5", blue eyes, light hair, fair skin. Also, Lyman had a Hardy Norton age 25 b Florida living with him in 1880 in Clay Co Fl. I wonder if this could be the Norton who married Cyrus's daughter Malatha? Carol
