I am searching for information on my great, great grandfather James William Smith. James W. Smith (William or Willis) was married to Mattie Ann or Mattie Elizabeth Russell. In the 1900 census of Elbert County they are found in the Eliam District. Living in the household are 1. William-son-age ?, 2. Charles-son-age 18 born October 1886, (Charles Marvin) 3. Benj. (Benjamin Clark-my great-grandfather)-son-age 10 born May 1890, 4. David K.-son-age 8 born May 1892, (David Kulen) 5. George F.-son-age 4 born October 1895 (George Franklin) Mattie's age at the time of the census was either 41 or 47. They had been married for 27 years at this time. They also had a daughter 6. Fannie who was married to a Walter Bates from Hartwell on Nov. 15, 1892 and a son 7. Samuel Russell Smith had already married Addie M. Mills on January 29, 1897 and a son Willie Ebben Smith who married Mattie Ann Moss Jan. 26, 1908. Benjamin was my greatgrandfather and he was born in Wilkes County I am told. I have lots of pictures and information from James William Smith forward and would love to share it with anyone else searching the same line. I have a lot of pictures of James William Smith and his brothers and sisters but I dont know their names. Would love to hear from anyone researching Elbert or Wilkes County Smith's. I have marriage dates and spouses of all of James William and Mattie Smith's children. I also have 2 store ledgers from a general store in the Hard Cash Community. I have found James Williams Smith and Willie Ebben Smith in these books. The dates on these books are around 1900-1904 or so. This leads me to believe that they may have lived in that part of Hart County after 1900. I have been told that James William Smith was buried in the Bowman Cemetary in 1904 but can find no proof of his death or a record of his grave in Bowman as a matter of fact anywhere in Elbert County. I know that after his death Mattie moved to South Georgia with the remaining children at home including my greatgrandfather Benjamin Clarke Smith. She died and is buried in South Georgia at McRae I believe. Thanks for any help you might be able to give me. I have been hitting this same brick wall for several years now. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
