Hello everyone. There seems to be something not right in my information. I have a Mary MCDUFF in the Logan County Census listed as living with her grandparents - John M. Clark and Judith Gaines but sources say they did not have any children and died young. I also have Mary's mother being Sarah Clark listed on Mary's death certificate. If anyone has any information on this, I would be grateful. Perhaps John M. Clark was an uncle? Or perhaps the book Francis Gaines of Albemarle County, VA and Elbert County, GA by Thomas R. Gaines is wrong? I have both John M. Clark and Judith R. Gaines down in the Logan Co. Census in 1880 - so they would not be young. Perhaps they just disappeared to KY? But I have nothing to say that Sarah was the daughter of John M. Clark and Judith Gaines. Angela Pogue EMAIL: angel@ngela.com WEB: www.angiebaby.com
I am looking for a McDuff who married Sally Clark. Sally Clarks parents are John M. Clark (bn 1823) and Judith (Judia) R. Gaines (Ginns). They were married 14 Feb 1843 in Elbert. Does anyone know anything about McDuffs in Elbert? Angela Pogue

I am sending my brick wall out again. I am trying to separate two James M. BUTLERs who were born in Elbert Co. GA 1811-1813, lived in Shelby and Coosa Co. AL until about 1850. One of them is James Madison Butler who died in 1855 in Shelby Co. AL. The other James M. BUTLER moved to Walker Co. AL and then to Decatur Co. TN and lived until at least 1891. These two people have such similar information that I am having great difficulty separating the two. If you are researching James M. BUTLER or even James BUTLER in these counties, please contact me at jerryb8779@aol.com so that we can compare notes. Thanks, Jerry
I am trying to find the parents of Asa Duncan (b. 1822 GA) and Flora Ann Johnson (b. 1821 GA). They were married on 01 Feb 1844. Their children were John N. (b. 1846), Malcolm Alexander (b. 1847), Mary (b. 1848), D. (male b. 1850), Jesse (b. 1851), Margaret (b. 1854), Asa Chandler (b. 1855) and Sarah (b. 1858). Asa Duncan appears in the 1850 and 1860 Elbert Co., GA census. I am having trouble determining who his parents were. I believe that Asa Duncan and Oliver M. Duncan (b. 1821 GA and also appears in the 1850 and 1860 Elbert Co., GA census) might be brothers. The reason I believe this is that in the 1870 Forsyth Co., GA census, Asa's son John appears with his wife Mary M. Tidwell (b. 1850), their son William (b. 1869), and S.E. Duncan (b. 1853 - a female relative?). The 1860 Elbert Co., GA census lists Sarah E. Duncan (b. 1853) as the daughter of Oliver M. Duncan. Does anyone have any information on this family? --Stephanie Campbell sjcampbell@aol.com
To the interest person: Death records are kept in most counties of Georgia. And the Archives in Atlanta also has them. I have found that if I can not obtain them on the county level, there may well be records in Atlanta. I have, so far had excellent luck in Atlanta! Judy Rountree Mason Rincon, Ga. 2jv@bellsouth.net
Do Georgia counties file death records in each county or do they go to a state office to be filed? And can you obtain a copy of a death certificate in Georgia? Thanks, Thelma K Shields shields@eufaula.lib.ok.us

Directions - where is it?
This was written by Mr. William Mills specifically for Houston County List, he has given me permission to forward it on to other lists, and I think it might be of help those researching ancestors that passed through this area. From: "William A. Mills" <wm-mills@juno.com> << Houston County Researchers: About 8 years ago, when I was compiling my MILLS family history, I utilized the Migration Trails to try to figure out where my ancestors came from, and where they were heading. In Central GA, Perry is known as the "Crossroads of Georgia". This isn't just because of the contemporary criss-crossing of Highways 41 & 341. Prior to Houston County's formation in 1821, this area of the state of Georgia was occupied by Indians. And, these Indians utilized major trails to travel between their settlements and hunting camps. The primary 3 trails which crossed Houston Co., GA were: 1. THE PECATONICA TRAIL: It passed through the states of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. It commenced at a connection of THE LOWER CHEROKEE TRADER'S PATH, about halfway between Spartanburg, SC and Atlanta, GA. From Atlanta, it proceeded South, just West of Macon, thru Perry, and then Americus, GA. It continued due South, and then crossed THE OLD TRADING PATH OF THE SOUTH about 75 miles south of Americus, and then proceeded to the East of Tallahassee, FL and directly to the Gulf of Mexico. 2. THE LOWER CREEK TRADING PATH: It passed through the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, passing through Birmingham, Macon, & Augusta, with important connections which went to Savannah and St. Augustine, Florida. In Georgia, it took an almost straight line from Augusta to Macon, and then proceeded Northwest and West into Alabama past Anniston and thru Birmingham. From there, it went into Mississippi. 3. THE MACON & MONTGOMERY TRAIL: This trail commenced at Macon, GA at a connection with THE LOWER CREEK TRADING PATH, then proceeded thru Perry and Columbus, GA into Montgomery, AL where it connected THE ALABAMA & MOBILE TRAIL and THE ALABAMA, CHOCTAW & NATCHEZ TRAIL. These Migration Trails followed the lines of least resistance which was always a valuable feature in transportation or travel. They also avoided rough, stony ground and dense undergrowth. Several of the current Interstate Highways substantially follow these exact Migration Trails. If there is enough interest, I may go into further detail of the various places in Georgia where these Migration Trails traversed. Because of the boundary changes of the Georgia counties, and the non-existence of many of the early towns, it would be best for me to refer to current cities and towns whereby these trails passed. If you know the places your ancestors came from prior to residing in Houston Co., GA, and then where they may have went after leaving here, you can bet that they utilized these Migration Trails, especially if it was prior to the railroads being built. It would be interesting for you to post to the Houston-L list, a brief outline of your ancestors' migration routes. For example, it may be something similar to: >NC > SC> Warren > Hancock > Twiggs > Houston > Muscogee Co., GA, and then into Alabama and Texas. I'll bet if you did this, you would collectively recognize a lot of patterns which would indicate other counties that you may need to research your ancestors in. Let's give it a try! William A. John J. MARTIN b. abt 1840 married Mary T. Stalnaker b. 1842 and married on 10-1-1867 in Elbert Co. I'm looking for siblings and parents of John J. MARTIN. These Martins lived in Elberton. I have also been unable to definitively connect Mary to the other STALNAKER's from the area, although the 1860 census of Hart Co. lists a Mary T. living with Benjamin and Eliza Stalnaker, (both of whom were born in SC). Does anyone connect with this lineage? Janet

In all my years on-line, I have encountered so many virus scares and warnings that it is beyond the realm of estimating. Add to that all the junk/scare/please help e-mail chain letter scams and you approach infinity. It has always amazed me at how folks are so easily fooled by these Cyber-Legends. None of the chain letters work or are legit. It is rare any of the virus scares have any merit. Just taking a moment to stop and think about most of them -- before hitting that forward button -- should easily reveal their falsity, by the nonsense they involve or state. It seems no one fully reads them and simply forwards them by habit. This e-mail is to mount a campaign to stop such things. I know one person that has become so paranoid from reading such e-mails, that she refuses to do anything but read e-mail (no download, no upload, no surfing, etc.). Next time you get such an e-mail, consider sending the "generic paranoia" at the end of this e-mail, to the sender. It is a tongue-in-cheek compilation of many of the more common chain e-mail scares and -- to me -- is a good and humorous way to make the point. This e-mail is also to do 2 more things. 1) Advise you of a web site called ABOUT.COM. This web site is about such e-mails. All the scams, please help, forward for luck, free beer, free vacation, etc., chain mails are here. You can find ALL of these scams on this site -- or at least a variant of them (yes -- folks change them and recirculate them). You can read how false they are or if they have any merit at all. You can also look up virus scares. The next time you get a chain letter/warning e-mail -- go to this site before you forward ANYTHING. Use the search engine to look for the "keyword" and read about whatever topic for which you just got an e-mail about. The URL is: http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/library/blhoax.htm 2) After all these years, I have actually encountered a virus. A REAL VIRUS. I have received it from no less than 5 people, so far. The virus is called PRETTY PARK.EXE. If you get an e-mail with this attached -- do not download and run it -- no matter who it appears to be from. The virus works by spreading itself via e-mail. If someone sends you an e-mail, the virus also sends you an e-mail (a second one in most cases) with a copy of itself attached. The second e-mail came from the noted senders computer -- but they are unaware this has happened. TELL THEM! Go to the site named in #1 above, and search for PRETTY PARK and read about how to get rid of this thing. In closing, the generic scare response, promised above: >I was on my way to the post office to pick up my case of free M&M's, >(sent to me because I forwarded their e-mail to five other people, >celebrating the fact that the year 2000 is "MM" in Roman numerals), when >I ran into a friend whose neighbor, a young man, was home recovering >from having been served a rat in his bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken - >which is predictable, since as everyone knows, there's no actual chicken >in Kentucky Fried Chicken, which is why the government made them change >their name to KFC. >Anyway, one day this guy went to sleep and when he awoke he was in his >bathtub and it was full of ice and he was sore all over and when he got >out of the tub he realized that HIS KIDNEYS HAD BEEN STOLEN. He saw a >note on his mirror that said "Call 911!" but he was afraid to use his >phone because it was connected to his computer, and there was a virus on >his computer that would destroy his hard drive if he opened e-mail entitled >"Join the crew!" He knew it wasn't a hoax because he himself was a >computer programmer who was working on software to prevent a global >disaster in which all the computers get together and distribute the >$250.00 Neiman-Marcus cookie recipe under the leadership of Bill Gates. >(It's true - I read it all last week in a mass e-mail from BILL GATES >HIMSELF, who was also promising me a free Disney World vacation and >$5,000 if I would forward the e-mail to everyone I know.) The poor man >then tried to call 911 from a pay phone to report his missing kidneys, >but a voice on the line first asked him to press #90, which unwittingly >gave the bandit full access to the phone line at the guy's expense. Then >reaching into the coin-return slot he got jabbed with an HIV-infected >needle around which was wrapped around a note that said, "Welcome to the >world of AIDS," Luckily he was only a few blocks from the hospital - the one >where that little boy who is dying of cancer is, the one whose last wish is >for >everyone in the world to send him an e-mail and the American Cancer >Society has agreed to pay him a nickel for every e-mail he receives. >I sent him two e-mails and one of them was a bunch of X's and O's in >the shape of an angel (if you get it and forward it to more than 10 >people, you will have good luck but for 10 people you will only have OK >luck and if you send it to fewer than 10 people you will have BAD >LUCK FOR SEVEN YEARS). So anyway the poor guy tried to drive himself to >the hospital, but on the way he noticed another car driving without >its lights on. To be helpful, he flashed his lights at him and was >promptly shot as part of a gang initiation. Send THIS to all the >friends who send you their junk mail and you will receive 4 green m&ms, >but if you don't the owner of Proctor and Gamble will report you to >their Satanist friends and you will have more bad luck: you will get >cancer from the Sodium Laureth Sulfate in your shampoo, your wife >will develop breast cancer from using the antiperspirant which clogs >the pores under your arms, and the government will put a tax on your >e-mails forever. I know this is all true 'cause I read it on the Internet. Terry Lunsford gomn@genealogy.org
