We are trying to locate members of the Frances Gaines family who owned land in 1905 at the corner of Antioch Road and Stinchcomb Church Road. Would also like to hear from anyone who may have information regarding this property. It was owned by Jesse Brown in 1844 and sold by his son, Thomas H. Brown to John G. Deadwyler, after 1864 -- who subsequently sold it to the Frances Gaines family. It is now owned by a Timber Company. We would like to know about any homesites that may have been on the property and whether or not there is a secluded family cemetery on the land. Any information or ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks, Ardie

Hello, I'm New to the List and this is my first e-mail to the list. Thomas PLEDGER Sr born in Granville NC settled in Elberton, Elbert Co, GA. In the 1830 Census in Elbert Co. GA. Thomas married Nancy Leavister/ Livistor/ Leaverton/ Leaviston/ Not sure which spelling is correct. Nancy was the daughter of George Leavister and wife Rebecca (?) Thomas' son James Pledger married Mary (Polly) FORD on 4 Aug 1816 married by Murrell Pledger a Clergyman in Elbert Co. Georgia. She was the daughter of Isaac Ford and wife Mary (?). Any help on lines of the wives of the PLEDGERs is greatly appreciated. I do have a lot on the PLEDGER line but not on LEAVISTER or FORD. THANKS, Linda Pledger Smith DougMIV@aol.com
Looking for any information on Tary (terry) Treadwell. He and his son John Henry enlisted in the confederate army out of Elbert County. Tary was the son of Issac Treadwells second marriage. Also researching the Jesse Kelley family.
I am looking for the wife of Josiah Dobbs (b. NC abt. 1785) who, I believe, lived in Elbert Co. as a young man. I know from census records that Josiah married a woman born in GA, and their first known child was born in TN in 1810. This child's name was Isaac Blanton Dobbs, which leads me to think he may have been named for his mother's father or other close male relative. Does anyone have a Blanton, Isaac or other, who had a marriageable daughter c. 1810? My guess is she would have been born between 1785-1795. Or for that matter, does anyone know anything about Josiah? He may have been the son of another Josiah--or maybe not. Thanks, Kate

Mona, over in Mississippi, asked for my source on the marriage of JOHN CUNNINGHAM ADAMS and FAITH ANN DICKERSON, and on their son HIRAM GAINES ADAMS (1839--1910). While he does make some errors, John McIntosh's "History of Elbert County 1790--1936" is my usual starting point. While some editions of his book are not indexed, fortunately mine is. I have in the huge ADAMS family, JOHN C. ADAMS m. MISS DICKERSON, 1833. He also has JAMES ADAMS JR. (Revolutionary Soldier) b. October 18, 1753, d. 1835, m. June 19, 1772, JANE CUNNINGHAM, b. abt .1756. JAMES ADAMS (Senior) is shown as having married CECILY FORD in 1751. JAMES ADAMS SR. is shown as a son of ROBERT ADAMS d. 1740, m. MOURNING LEWIS. The McIntosh book was apparently assembled from the personal recollections of people still living in Elbert County in the 1930s. If there were no members of a family still living in Elbert County, he had to rely on courthouse records. It is still a valuable book. One source is Jim Roach, jhr@earthlink.net who has done a lotof research on the Dickerson family. Mark Mann today referred us to his excellent web site, brave@ourfamilies.net which takes HIRAM GAINES ADAMS through his marriage to PARTHENA JANE FRANCES PAYNE KEZIAH BLAKE SEYMOUR and their eight ldren. --Jim Lee
