Two of my great-grandparents married in Hart County after the Civil War, bringing together several Elbert County families. SUSAN REBECCA SEWELL, (1847--1931) was the daughter of JOSEPH SEWELL and MARY C. "POLLY" STINCHCOMB. WILLIAM HARWELL DICKERSON (1839--1920) was the son of JOHN DICKERSON (and grandson of ZACHARIAH DICKERSON and an unknown wife, possibly SUSAN) and ELIZABETH THORNTON, daughter of BENJAMIN THORNTON and SARAH UPSHAW (and granddaughter of Rev. DOZIER THORNTON and LUCY ELIZABETH HILL.) (SARAH UPSHAW, first wife of BENJAMIN THORNTON, SR., was daughter of JOHN UPSHAW and AMY GATEWOOD.) (AMY GATEWOOD was daughter of LARKIN GATEWOOD and CATHERINE PENN.) First on the scene, so far as I can tell, was DOZIER THORNTON who founded Vann's Creek Baptist Church at Ruckersville in 1785. The biggest hole in my patchwork quilt is the marriage of SARAH UPSHAW and BENJAMIN THORNTON, SR. There are many clues to both prove and disprove this marriage. Soon after their marriage, WILLIAM H. DICKERSON and SUSAN REBECCA SEWELL moved to Troup County, GA, where they raised seven children. --Jim Lee, jimlee@beachlink.com Nags Head, NC

Sheila, this is what I have in my DB on the Ginn name in Elbert and just offer it as clues... maybe you will recognize some of these surnames: In 1835, Mary Casey Pace, widow of Barnabas Pace, along with other heirs of Barnabas, including John & Elizabeth Casey, sold land on Millshoal Creek formerly granted to Barnabas Pace, to Henry Carlton. At that time it was bounded by Yarborough, Wiley GINN, Wm. Rice, and widow Harbin. Maybe this Wiley Ginn is related to your Isaac Ginn? - Joyce Harris -----Original Message----- From: Sheila Casper [mailto:casperfamily@mosquitonet.com] Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2001 4:24 PM To: GAELBERT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GAELBERT] Rollcall: GINN Isaac Ginn died in 1847 and is buried in Holly Springs Bapt. I'm trying to find the cemt. or burial place of Henry Shackelford, Sr. AND Henry Shackelford, Jr. both died in Elbert Co.,Ga. Henry Shackelford, Sr. wrote out his will Apr. 5, 1808. It was probated in Jan. 1819. So he died between 1808-1819. According to Hist. Collections Ga. DAR p. 197, Henry Shackelford, Sr. lived at Middleton Woods, which is near Doves Creek. Henry Shackelford, Jr. died after Aug. 21, 1821 (when the census was taken) and before Jan. 1828 (neither his widow, Martha J. Mann, or his estate could not pay his debts, so one of his slaves was sold, to pay off the debts. Minutes of Inferior Court, pages 59& 60, Jan. term). Does anyone have any suggestions, ideas, or can help me? I just received a copy of "Historical Collections of the Georgia Chapters DAR Vol. 3, Records of Elbert County, Georgia" (I got this book hoping to find out where the above Henry Shackelfords were buried, but no such luck). I will do look ups from this book for anyone who wants it, but fair warning sometimes I can be offline for a few days at a time, but I'll always get back to you. Happy 4th of July!
