Thought this might be of interest to some of y'all with English Ancestors, although most of you probably already knew it. Grace S. Green Sebastian, FL Middle Names Illegal For Our English Ancestors >From an article in "Harper's Magazine", early 1900's: via Smoke Signals, publication of Ottawa County Genealogical Society, Miami, OK. Middle names, hard as it is to credit in this generation, ere once illegal. The old English law was very definite as to the naming of children and, according to Coke, "a man cannot have two names of baptism". It is requisite, the law goes on, "that the purchaser be named by the name of his baptism and his surname, and that special heed be taken to the name of baptism". Royal personages have always been allowed to have more than one given name, but as late as 1600, it is said, there were only four persons in all England who had two given names. In 1620 the Mayflower sailed for America, and there was not a man or woman upon it who had a middle name. Even a century and a half ago, double names were very uncommon. The English used to dodge the law at times by ingeniously compounding names. Thus an old parish register in England may occasionally show combinations such as Fannasabilia, which is Fanny and Sibyl joined together, and Anna and Maria. Maris is one of the earliest middle names of record for boys. It was given in honor of the Virgin Mary. As much as they dared, beginning along in the eighteenth century, parents evaded the "one name law". But, even as late as 100 years ago, custom was against the middle name. If the names of the signers of the Declaration of independence be looked over, it will be found that only three of them had middle names. the first five presidents of the United States had only one name each -- George Washington, - John Adams Thomas Jefferson - James Madison - and James Monroe. Before Grant, eighteenth of the line, there were only three double named executives: John Quincy Adams - William Henry Harrison - and James Knox Polk. When middle names got going and became the fashion, the law having dropped into disuse, parents went to work combining names for their offspring enthusiastically One custom was done away with in England in consequence of this, the plan of naming eldest son for the estate, particularly where he succeeds to that estate through his mother. This old practice is still followed to some extent in this country by the mother's maiden name being given to the eldest son, and this identifies the boy when he reaches manhood, and so has some purpose. >From the Augusta Genealogical Society, vol 3, issue 2. First let me apologize if you receive more than one copy of this as I am posting this to more than one list. Do you know anything about any of these folks who appear on the 1820 Gwinnett Co GA census? 316. Asa WADE 310001-10001-0 540. Edward WADE Sr. 000001-00001-0 575. John WADE 210010-30010-0 632. Edward WADE 000010-20100-0 650. James WADE 010010-32010-0 According to William C. Steward in "Gone to Georgia" these WADEs had Southside VA antecedents. Also according to Steward these folks came to Gwinnett Co via NC and Pendleton Dist SC. Steward goes on to say the Edward WADE Sr. and Edward WADE (Jr?) above moved to DeKalb Co GA by 1830. Here comes the questions: Question 1: Are all five of these guys from the same family? Question 2: Is the Edward WADE Sr. here the same one who was on the 1790 Pendleton Dist SC census? Question 3: Is either of these Edward WADEs the one who sold land in Pendleton Dist SC in 1804 while he was a resident of Elbert Co GA? Question 4: Is the James WADE above and either of the Edward WADEs above the James and Edward WADE who witnessed a 1810 Elbert Co GA deed for Joseph KING? Hi, new to the list. Does anyone just happen to have info on the John A. CAMERON shown on the newly posted GA Lodge list of 1854? Sure would like to know something about him! Thanks Zou Feagin zfeagin@aol.com
Hi Folks, Pardon me if you receive more than one copy of this as I am cross posting because I need your help (and the lists are kind of slow). I am looking for info on the Edward WADE who appears on a Mar. 3, 1804 Pendleton Dist SC deed where he sold land to Moses HOLLAND. On this deed Edward is referred to as "Edward Wade of Elbert Co., Ga.". Moses HOLLAND, a rather well known SC Baptist minister, also witnessed a deed for a Edward WADE in the 1790s. On this deed Edward is shown as having a wife named Nancy. Also as witness on this deed is William KING. William KING, himself a SC Baptist minister of some renown, lived for many years in Spartanburg Co SC and was the minister of the Head of Enoree Baptist Church in the late 1790s. Moses HOLLAND and William KING were closely associated in the Big Creek Baptist Church in the early 1790s. Living with William KING and wife at the taking of the 1830 Spartanburg Co census was an E. WADE. This E. WADE is suspected to be Elijah WADE who may be the son of this Edward WADE. 1. Could this be the Edward WADE who is on the 1800 Pendleton Dist SC Census but is not on the 1810 Pendleton Dist census? (There is another Edward WADE on the 1810 census but is younger than the Edward on the 1800 census). 2. Is this Edward WADE the one who was b. abt. 1760, m. a Nancy (no surname), and was the son of the Edward WADE who d. in 1790 in Greene Co GA? 3. Could this Edward be the one who appears as a winner in the 1805 GA Land Lottery while as a resident of Elbert Co GA? 4. Is this the same Edward WADE who was the subscribing witness for a Oct. 1,1825 Hall Co GA deed where Elijah WADE purchased land? 5. Has anyone seen any info on an Edward WADE in the Elbert Co GA records? If you can provide any info that may assist in answering any of these questions your assistance would be very appreciated. Hi Listers, I am new to your list but hope we can help each other. I am looking for an Edward WADE b. abt. 1757 and whose wife had the given name of Nancy. Nancy's maiden name may be JUSTICE. Edward and Nancy lived in Pendleton Dist of SC from at least 1780 to 1800. Both were prob. b. in VA. Edward is a party to an 1804 Pendleton Dist SC deed that identifies him as "Edward Wade of Elbert County, Georgia". This info has of course led me to Elbert Co. Does anyone have any info on Edward WADE or his wife Nancy? Any help would be very appreciated. Looking for any and all information on Lewis Jones of Elbert County Ga. Trying to connect him to my Lewis Jones who married Elizabeth Wright Morris. Lewis and Elizabeth died and are buried in Hall County Ga. Thanks
Could someone please tell me the name of the book [or books] on Elbert Co. records by Michael Farmer? Thanks. Pat
You mention: <<in the "Records of Elbert County, Georgia" published by the Georgia Chapters of the DAR? >> Where might one find these DAR records? Pat
Hi, I found that SOME of the newly found records were in both the Georgia Archives and the LDS films and had been available all along. I suspect that at least some had been photographed before being put into the basement. Who knows; maybe all of them had been. Anne Booth
Allana, Have you seen the information about Henry Shackleford that is contained in the "Records of Elbert County, Georgia" published by the Georgia Chapters of the DAR? There's an extract from his will, plus several deeds and such. If you don't have this information, please contact me and I will send it to you. The index does not mention a Paschal Shackleford, though. Best, Lowell
Hi, I'm a new subscriber searching for the parentage of Paschal J. Shackelford, born about 1800 in GA and married to Harriet Hickman on 1 Feb., 1828 in Jefferson Cty., AL. I'm hoping to find that Paschal was the son of Henry Shackelford of Elbert Co. Perhaps old courthouse records may help in this search. I was told that several boxes of old records were found in the basement of the Elbert Courthouse about 5 - 7 years ago. Does anyone know what happened to these documents? Have they been archived? Any suggestions on how to find out what type of information they contained? Any help would be appreciated on locating these old records. Many thanks, Allana Bosch
Mary LEWIS was my g-g-g-g-grandmother. She married John MOORE about 1790 and had several children (believed to include Agnes, Elijah, Frances, Hester, Sarah [Sally], Lewis, Mary, and Fanny). Many of the children were said to have been born in Elbert County. Daughter Sarah (1792-1847) married John FORTSON in 1814. Mary's parents are thought to be Phillip and Sarah. I would like to swap information on this family. Roger Bartlett Austin
