    3. This is taken special section of the Effingham Herald Newpaper on Jan. 19, 2000. It was titled EFFINGHAM COUNTY...THE LAST ONE HUNDRED YEARS, a special edition to the Effingham Herald. It contained several interesting pages with excerpts of the past records of the county. previous to this someone had asked about the EFFINGHAM ACADEMY, and its origin. Found these items of interest. 1911-Sept. 8-Springfield's new brick hugh school, named Effingham Academy, formly opens on Sept. 11. 1936-Jan 3-A bond election to build a new UP-TO-DATE high school wins a sweeping victory with 153 for, 3 against. construction on a new school is to began at once. 1951-oct. 12-The EFFINGHAM ACADEMY BUILDING is sestroyed by fire for the second time in 11 years. superintendent E.B. mingledorff says school will carry on in churches, city halls and the Truetlen Building. 1959-jan 3-The new $100,000 Effingham County School gym is dedicated. 1976-May 26-Effingham Academy holds first commencement exercises for 16 seniors. **1985-July 31-EFFINGHAM ACADEMY'S board votes to close the school due to declineing enrollment. the final graduation ceremonies are held Aug. 4 and the school closes Aug. 5.
