    1. RE: [GAEARLY-L] MOCK family of Early County, GA
    2. Holland, James
    3. Hello Carol, Thanks for you kind answer, I have been looking for information about George Frank and his wife Mary Ann (Holland) Mock. Were they both your GG grandparents? I need birth/death/place information on them and what children they had. My great grandfather lived there as well, his name was William Jackson Holland born in 1861, so he was two when they married. I assume that they lived in Early County the rest of their lives. Regards Mike Holland james.m.holland@compaq.com -----Original Message----- From: Erinhaus@aol.com [mailto:Erinhaus@aol.com] Sent: Monday, February 21, 2000 8:45 PM To: GAEARLY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GAEARLY-L] MOCK family of Early County, GA George Frank Mock is my GG grandfather. 2. Holland, James
    3. Hello, I'm Mike Holland, a new subscriber to this mail list. My Great Grandfather, William Jackson HOLLAND, lived in Early County for a time. His step father was a George Frank MOCK who married Mary Ann (ANTLEY) HOLLAND in Henry County, AL on April 21, 1863. Mary Ann died on December 17, 1908 in Early County. They evidently moved to Early County right after their marriage but I haven't been able to locate them in Early County. I have no further information on Mary Ann or George Frank MOCK, does anyone else have this family listed in Early County? Any information about these people would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Mike Holland james.m.holland@compaq.com

    2. Notes and Sources - 21 Feb 2000 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - NEEDHAM (1795) MCLENDON QUESTION: WHO WERE HIS PARENTS? General: NEEDHAM MCLENDON was born before 1795 in South Carolina. He died 30 Oct 1874 in Ft. Gaines?,Georgia. Will: IGI-Batch File 7208336, sheet 83. Needham McLendon's will is in Clay Co., Will Book A, page 56-57; IGI-Batch File 7208336, sheet 83; October 11, 1872. I was told that Needham attended the Zion Baptist Church in Ft. Gaines, GA. I called Information and they said that a church by that name was in Blackshear, GA 912-449-5362, whether this is the same church, I don't know. CENSUS REPORTS: Census: 1830 Early County, Georgia, there is a NEEDHAM MCCLENDON also. Suffice it to say NEEDHAM MCLENDON migrated from South Carolina to Georgia before the 1830 census was taken. There was a LEWIS MCLENDON in the 1830 census, however, he would be much older than the one listed below, I believe. Asa McClendon, age 24 (1826) born in Georgia; John McLendon, age 28 (1832) born in Misssissippi; Neadham McClendon, age 50 (1800) born in South Carolina; William McClendon, age 28 (1832) born in Mississippi; James McLendon, age 28 (1832) born in Georgia; Silas McLendon, age ____ Lewis McLendon, age 32 (1828) born in Georgia. Census: 1860 Census Index - CD #318 Neadham McLendon Clay Co., Georgia, 969th District - Page #058 (Slave Schedule) Neadhan (spelled like this) McLendon Clay Co., Georgia, Fort Gaines P.O., p. 1860 Clay County, Georgia Slave Schedule, slaves were considered personal property and is listed as such under that category in the U.S. censuses. NEEDHAM MCLENDON owned 14 slaves in 1860 as listed in the slave schedule of which 5 are listed as MULATTOs. Next door to him, ASA MCLENDON, his son, owned 3 slaves of which 1 is listed as MULATTOs. My family was listed as Mulattos. Also there was a NEEDHAM in Mississippi. By my notes the other 2 Needhams from Lauren County were dead at this time. IS THE NEEDHAM MCLENDON OF MISSISSIPPI RELATED TO THE NEEDHAM MCLENDON OF GEORGIA? 1860 MS McLendon, Needham Census CD 318 1866 Simpson County, Mississippi Census, page 019 - Needham McLendon Census: 1870 GA McLendon, Needham Census CD 291 1870 Fort Gaines, Clay Co., Georgia census, 969th Precinct, page 55, #390-390, line 28, NEEDHAM MCLENDON is living with his son ASA MCLENDON. NEEDHAM has $3000 real estate property, and $12,000 personal property after slavery ended. My family (PAUL & MARTHA MCLENDON) is living next door to him. Other McLendons in the 1870 census are Amos McLendon, age 10; Asenath McLendon, age 37; Jesse McLendon, age 22, John McLendon, age 50, and Joshua McLendon, age 76 born in South Carolina. Needham's home is gone. The land is on maps in Ft. Gaines. It is directly across the street from where Mrs. Bruner, the librarian, lives. There is an incredible large log house there when Christopher Zell visited it. He said that some guy had bought the log house and was dismantling it to rebuild on his property. Are there any pictures of him and his wives? Would any of his descendents have pictures of him, and his family. WHO WERE THE PARENTS OF NEEDHAM MCLENDON? Does Needham show up in the 1800, 1810 Darlington District, South Carolina census with his parents? Jackie Baldwin Rucker said that she suspected that either Ephraim McLendon, or William McLendon was Needham's father. When we find out who the parents of NEEDHAM MCLENDON are, then we need to find out if they left wills which were probated; inventories made; and appraisements carried out. I am seeking to see if the names of slaves were mentioned in the various inventories. Did NEEDHAM receive slaves from his parents? If so, then who? How does Needham descend from DENNIS MECKLENDON born about 1650, and who had 5 children: Elizabeth (born abt 1672); Briant (born abt 1674); Dennis (born abt 1676); Francis (born abt 1678); and Thomas (born abt 1680)?? It is documented that DENNIS MECKLENDON was first in Barbados before moving to North Carolina. In the World Family Tree CD, Volume 1: There is a genealogical tree named: Howard, Lessig, McArthur of IL, PA 1551-1995; Tree number 2553; Submitted on: 31 May 1995: Includes 21 people with notes and the surnames which appear most frequently in this tree are: Howard, Lessig, McArthur, Bice, McLendon, Meeks, Basye, Rish. These people are there: McLendon, Neadham b1800-1809 SC; McLendon, Neadham Dewitt b1830-1839 Unknown; McLendon, Needham Holmes b1850-1859 Unknown - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the 1820 Darlington District, South Carolina census are these people: JAMES; DENNIS; JESSE; and WILLIAM MCLENDON. (My NEEDHAM MCLENDON is not listed there. He would have been around age 25.) 1830 Jones County, Georgia, there is also a DENNIS MCCLENDON. A. McLendon, Susan Barefield 17. p. 583 S. A. McLendon 18. p. 39 Needham McLendon & John McLendon NOTES ON MY ANCESTRY: PAUL MLENDON & MARTHA UNKNOWN are my great, great, great grandparents. 1. PAUL MLENDON was born in 1824 in Ft. Gaines, Clay Co., GA. He died before 1880 in Georgia. I believe that he died before 1880 in Georgia. All information on Paul's family that I know so far is derived from the 1870 Fort Gaines, Clay Co. , Georgia, p. 34, stamped pg. 17. Paul's surname is spelled as MLENDON (no "C's" at all) in this 1870 census. The 1870 census takers tended to describe the skin color of people as they saw them, as compared to the 1880 census takers who tended to report the race designation rather than skin tone color. My entire family is listed as MULATTOES, living next to the white slaveowner, NEEDHAM MLENDON and his wife, HARRIET. Paul has $250 in personal property listed in the 1870 census, approximately 5 years after slavery was over. How did he come by this much money is the next question to ask and explore about him? I took the information from the 1870 Fort Gaines, Clay County, Georgia and researched the 1860, 1850, and 1840 censuses to see if I could match all the people there as slaves of NEEDHAM MCLENDON in Fort Gaines during those times by subtracting 10 years from their 1870 ages and then looking for close matches of age and coloring. NEEDHAM MCLENDON did in fact own slaves at that time. The fact that Paul and his family were MULATTOS helped to distinguish them from the rest of the slaves, because the rest of the slaves were BLACK in color as stated in the census. These are the matches I found: 1870> 1860> 1850> 1840 Paul, age 46 Mulatto> Male Slave, age 35 Mu> age 25 Mu Martha, age 45 Mu> Female Slave, age 33 Mu> age 20 Mu> has one slave btw 10-23 Clarissa, age 29 Mu> Female Slave, age 14 Mu> Joseph, age 18 Mu> Male Slave, age 8 Mu Benjamin, age 15 Mu Therefore, it is strongly suggested that NEEDHAM MLENDON was the slaveowner of some of the family of PAUL & MARTHA MLENDON. Furthermore, in the 1870 census NEEDHAM MLENDON's family and PAUL & MARTHA MLENDON's family are listed side by side there. (During the summer of 1996, I traveled to Ft. Gaines, Georgia and met a descendent of NEEDHAM MLENDON, JACKIE RUCKER. We compared the facial features of BENJAMIN MLENDON to that of her grandfather, NEEDHAM HOLMES MCLENDON. BENJAMIN does not have Negroid features, but he has Caucasian features in the face like him. He was listed as MULATTO in the 1870 census) In the 1880 Federal census, MARTHA has moved from Ft. Gaines, Clay County, Georgia about 20 miles down the road to Early County, Georgia, 1140th Militia Dist, page 55, SD. 5, ED.27? (this page was extremely light, and almost unreadable), house #527- family #527, Paul is not shown with Martha who is listed as age 55, House Keeper. With her are her sons, GEORGE, age 19 (an age discrepancy); HENRY, age 15 (an age discrepancy), and JAMES, age 12 (an age discrepancy, also). This group is still listed as MULATTOES, therefore verifying that they were extremely light skinned people, almost white looking. In fact, the family has a picture of BENJAMIN MCLENDON, one of MARTHA's sons, his facial features are note Negroid typical, they are Caucasian type. In later censuses, members of the family are just listed as being Black. We need to find a death certificate of PAUL MCLENDON before 1880 in Georgia. While searching for this family through the various censuses, it seems that the family moved from Clay County, Georgia in 1870 to Early County, Georgia in 1880 to Alabama around 1900, particularly Henry County. There is a break in documentation between 1880 and 1900 because the 1890 Federal Census went up in flames in a warehouse fire. To fill in this gap, we need to find the tax records for verification of where they traveled, or lived then. - ------------------------------ SOURCES Prepared by: Saundra Brown SaundraB@aol.com

    3. I have checked my tomb index--- that I copied off the one in the library and I do not see either of these names in the index......That does not mean they are not buried there as you say, but are they marked? Joan Herndon in Cedar springs, Ga.

    2. Some of the larger cities began keeping Death Records before 1900, but for the most part, Georgia's Death Index starts in 1919. The Georgia Archives has the index which is on microfiche. Some genealogical libraries probably also have purchased copies from the Georgia Department of Vital Statistics. I think they started keeping birth records at the same time. You can get birth/death records from each county in the Probate Office, Ordinaries Office.

    2. Hi All.... First time posting to this list....:) I had a couple of questions: 1. I was wondering if there is a survey anywhere online for this cemetery or does anyone do look-ups? I recently found out a few of my relatives are buried here. 2. Are there Birth and Death Indexes for Georgia (specifically Early County)? If so, does anyone know how far they go back or how I can get access to one. The FHC near me doesn't have them. (I'm in NY). Thanks! Patricia Names are: Martha Elizabeth McCOY, her twins, Milton and Mildren (died within two weeks of birth) and a son, Newton JONES.

    2. Joan Herndon
    3. Paul, they are open no holidays and usually active Monday thru Friday from 9:30 until 5 O'Clock EST......Hope this helps.......the library has a Georgia room and all you have to do is ask the clerk in charge about the room.......sometime a bit organized and sometime not at all.........Volume III is due out this year which MIGHT help you some. Do you already have Volume I and II of the Historical Collections of Early County? Why does it prove to be so difficult to find the Thames in Early County? Weren't they from the 3 counties above us?.........Joan Herndon in lower Early County, Ga.

    3. Liz, I research the Lee family of Early Co GA. My ancestor Elias Lee had a daughter, Persis Lee b c1808 who married #1 Jesse Tull and had 2 children 1)William L Tull & 2) Huel A Tull. After Jesse Tull's death, Persis married 5 May 1841 in Early Co GA to a William McElvy b c1808. By 1850, this William McElvy owned over 1000 acres of land. I have more details about all of this. Persis died 25 Dec 1854 and is buried in a Private Lee Cemetery in what is now Clay Co Ga. William was undoubtedly married to someone prior to his marriage with Persis as there is a 15 yr old William McElvy listed with them on the 1850 Early Co GA census. Is this William McElvy, b c1808, related to your William McElvy (1778-1842), and if so, do you have more exact dates for him? Thanks. Lindy Lee Hard

    1. Re: [GAEARLY-L] McELVY
    2. Lindy, Yes, your William McElvy, b. 1808 is the son of my g-g-g-grandfather, William McElvy, ca 1778-1842 and the brother of my g-g-grandfather, Lawson Gamble McElvy. I have a little more info that I'll be happy to share with you if you will give me a day or two. I just got home from a long day at work and don't have the time right now. Will get back to ya soon. Liz
