Good Morning All, I am trying to find the parents of my great grandmother, Willie Adeline Womble. She was born in Early County, GA in 1863 and married my great grandfather William Jackson Holland there in 1882. Does anyone have any information on the Womble family that they are willing to share? Also does anyone have the 1870/1880 censuses for Early County, GA and could please look for a Willie A. Womble there? Thanks Mike Holland james.m.holland@compaq.com
I have in my possession a picture dating back to the late 1920's which I would be happy to share. The picture was found in my grandmother's pictures and my mother remembers Jetta: Three women are shown: Margaret Godsby White (b 1850, married to Gilford White) Her daughter, Ida White Strickland, married to Lum (sp?) Strickland in Early Co. and Ida's daughter Jetta Lee Strickland, heard she married a Maddox? Anyone with any ties to these folks, just let me know! Dianne

Is there a marriage license for Nancy Newberry who married G. Franklin Williams? Do you know where they are buried? Thanks-Sheila
To naomi: A good photography outfit possibly could restore your picture, hope you can find one soon.....Joan
Dear Vickie: My Charles A. Jonnikin was born Oct. 10, 1847. We have no further records prior to that. In a deed book there is a Benjamin Journigan in land purchasing around 1802. I know there are Jernigan/Jonnikin/Jonakin in the Ward/Johnston township area of Edgefield Co. between 1790-1840, but who, is still a question. Many from VA & NC migrated to SC after the Revolutionary War. Later with lotteries and land grants they and their families moved to GA & AL. I have a family bible that Charles gave to Florence in 1898. This was eight years after her marriage to John Calvin Temples. Perhaps it was before his death. She was his oldest child. Hello Gail and Roger Naomi here Well, well, my world is growing by leaps and bounds. God to hear from you about the Dawson/Jernigan lines. Yes I do have James Peter and Nancy Jernigan Dawson in my files. I wrote a pretty long Email earlier and hit the wrong button and went back to 'you've got mail' screen, so will try again. I show they had 8 children, do you have more? Anyway, I have been all over SW and some of SE GA from the FL line to Columbus and beyond doing my 'addiction' genealogy. I searched for graves of all in my files and one in particular I could not locate was one of J P & Nancy Dawson' sons, Rev Enoch Dawson and wife Amanda F Harrell. Well one time while I was in Columbus visiting my mother in a nursing home, I decided to go to Riverdale Cemetery there to visit family graves. Well as I was walking, as anyone doing genealogy does, I was looking at names. Lo and behold to my surprise, was Rev Enoch and Amanda Dawson buried in Columbus Musco GA . I descend from Fredonia Jernigan a dau of Hardy and Mary Ann Killingsworth Jernigan. I foudn Hardy had died bef 1860, and gmother was b: 1864,so could not have been a dau of his. Always shown on Census records as JERNIGAN, not STONE. I don't know she was ever married to George R W Stone or not, but I did find 2 different marriages for him after my grandmother Georgia Watson Jernigan {nee Stone} was born. Gmother married William PAGE, and were parents of my mother. Did also find that the two of them were students at the Damascus Academy in 1860 and grandmother was born 1864 to Fredonia. She was raised by Mary and two daughters, Clementine and Josephine, after Hardy died. Once Mary died, Clementine and Josephine went to live with siblings, my gmother went to live with Mary' sister Martha that was married to J Bird DUKE and was listed in the census as grandneice. I kind of figure that Fredonia was not married, maybe died at childbirth being so young, for George Stone married twice more not that long after my gmother was born. The last to one Georgia Johnson must have not been good either, for she lived alone with her grandmother in the 1870 census and in the Will for this Gmother, it stated 'IF GEORGIA EVER WENT BACK TO HER HUSBAND, SHE WOULD GET NOTHING FROM HER ESTATE' when she died. Well grandma died, she shared in the estate, and she had a baby Annie Jane Elizabeth Stone by the same George Stone, that was 1/2 sister to my gmother Georgia 13 years younger I have pic's of the two but not together. I found the guardianship papers for Annie Jane Elizabeth Stone {m: Anglin} to one Sophronia Johnson Boland and her husband Boley Roland. I have not found out if these Johnson girls were sisters or not, but I do not believe so as of now! The census I found them on were two different familes but could have been cousins, but gdaus of gmother Johnson anyway. I do have quite a lot on the Dawson, Duke, and other names but don't even know the firstname of the NALL that Letitia M Dawson married. I do know that mama spoke often of the Nall family and I have a pic of a few men that I believe has a Charlie Nalls included. If you send me names will be glad to check to see if they are in my files, for I do have so many. I am carring my lines, my husbands, and my bro-in-laws. but mine is the only from the area which we are speaking about. About 40,000 so far in my computer, so just ask and will be glad to exchange names with you both. Glad that you wrote and I found you. Maybe we can help each other a lot.
Joan Naomi again Just happened to think about a picture of Blake Washington Jernigan in his CSA uniform that I have but the picture can hardly be usable for it is almost totally 'black'. He can be made out and has a long white beard but is hardly the picture you could have reproduced. Hope that it does not change any further than it is at this time, for you can still make him out sitting there in a chair.
Hi Barbara Naomi here Is the article small enough to use first on a copy machine, then it would not bleed through. If not, a copy machne could reduce it in size to be small enough to do the same. I would suspect though you probably have tried EVERYTHING to scan in a good copy but this is just off the top of my head. Seems as though I have seen a copy myself or even may have a copy. I will check the different files it could be in, that is IF I have a copy, and see what I can do to help.
D.S.Jernigan--Wounded at Strausburg and taken prisoner at New Market, Va, 1864--This item is taken from "THE LAST VETERAN" --Early County Ga. Library--Blakely, Ga. 31723
Is there anyway to get a JPEG file of the picture that accompanied this article to be used on the Jernigan Homepage? I tried scanning the newspaper article but it did not make a good copy- Too much bleeding through. >From Early CO News 6 Sept 1934 Death Claims Another Veteran of Confederacy Mr. David S. Jernigan Passed away Peacefully Early Saturday Night Death is fast claiming the few remaining Veterans of the Confederacy, and on Saturday night removed the only living follower of Jackson and Lee who enlisted from Early County in the War Between the Sates. Mr. David S. Jernigan passed away peacefully about 9 O'clock Saturday night at the home of his son, Mr. D. B. Jernigan, in this city, after a week's illness. Having reached the remarkable age of 93 years and vigorous and active for the greater part of this time, the human mechanism finally surrendered to the Grim Reaper. Mr. Jernigan was a native of this county, although born in territory which has since been cut from the original Early. He was born at Fort Gaines on March 13, 1841, hence was in his 94th year. He spent nearly 62 years of his life in Clay County, coming to Early 32 years ago. For the past 22 years he had made his home with his son in Blakley. When the call to arms was sounded at the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in 1861 under Captain Crawford in Company 1 of the Early Guards. He served throughout the four years of the war. He was wounded and bore scars from that struggle. He could reminisce in a most interesting manner of the experiences of that momentous period in the life of the old South. Funeral services for Mr. Jernigan were held from the Methodist church-of which the deceased was the oldest living member-Sunday afternoon at four o'clock. The Rev. R. L. Whitehead, pastor of the church paid tribute to the fine qualities of the deceased as a citizen and Christian and his valor as a soldier. Interment followed in the city cemetery with the Stars and Bars -flag of the Confederacy- draped across the casket. Pallbearers and honorary escort included Messrs. M.T. Chipstead, G.O. Gunter, G.M. Sparks, John G. Butler, W.J. Grist, W.C. Jordan, R.C. Singletary, C.A. Grubbs, Grady Holman, Thurman Hodges, and W.C. Cook. Surviving are five children, viz: D.B. Jernigan, of Blakely; J. D. Jernigan of Fort Gaines; Mrs. J. M. Martin, of Enterprise, ALA; Mrs. J. W. Harrell and Mrs. W.H. Rankin, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. 28 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren also survive. Barbara
Mary Kelley Mock is not in the tomb index for Early County. Please try Miller County. Joan
Dear Gail: My GGrandmother, Florence Emma Jonnikin Nov. 29, 1872-Jan. 31, 1944 was the daughter of Charles A. Jonnikin Oct. 10, 1847. Charles married Jane V. Johnson May 1869. By all accounts, Jernigan was the parent surname. Many of the Jonnikin/Jernigan variations came from families that couldn't spell. This family was from the Edgefield-Saluda Co. area, SC. Robert Temples Gail's Mail wrote: > > Naomi > I noticed your surnames on your recent post, and also saw that you are reseaching in Clay county.....My gr-gr granmother was Nancy A Jernigan who married Rev. James Peter Dawson in Clay Co. in 1856......On their marriage record it is spelled "Jonakin" first and at the bottom of the page it looks as tho it is spelled "Jouringon".....Anyway, I have also seen in other places, it was spelled Jernigan.....Was wondering if you have Nancy in your line......I haven't begun researching this particular line as of yet, but plan to soon.....My goodness, there are so many lines to look for..LOL > Thanks.. > Gail
Parent of David W. Jernigan are Moody Jernigan and Patsy Milton. Virginia Jernigan Sanders has completed a book out now on this group. Contact me for her address. We have also found that Moody is son of Lewis Jernigan of Edgefield, SC. Apparently it is that spelling thing again. Seems to be inherited! We found a deed from Lewis Jernigan to son Muddy Jernigan. Lewis and Benjamin who went to AL. are related. Barbara
Robert, Does any of your Edgefield Jernigans/Jonnikins have the name Benjamin or Joseph further back? My Benjamin and Joseph are found there in the late 1790's and early 1800's. Then they moved on to GA and finally settled in Conecuh and Escambia Co AL. Just thought I would ask. Vickie
Hi....my mother is a Jernigan. She is descended from David W. Jernigan who married a Nancy Mahaly Blackmon. Believe me when I say I understand your frustration....we have been having a terrible time trying to find out who David's father and mother were. I don't recognize the names you are asking about. I have found that just when you think you aren't going to find anything ever though, something pops up. Let me know if I can help you in any other way with this. Good Luck and Keep your chin up...it does get easier..... Sherri Wilson
I am seeking information for Mary Kelly Mock, who died about 1850 and may be buried in Early Co. Can anyone find her in the cemetery lists? Thanks, Barbara
