Hi Greg, I am also looking for this same information. Here is a message that I received from a cousin of ours who has put new headstones on their graves. Her name and email is Shirley Branch and her email is BranchRoot@AOL.COM Hi Bonnie & Floyd, I just pulled my notes and I meant to say Elizabeth Bostick mother was a Chapman. Littleberry Bostick married _______Chapman. I don't have a first name for her yet. Talk to you later, Shirley Can you tell me which one of Benjamin's children and grandchildren you are connected to? My father is Burnice Lee Tipton (Panama City, FL), his father is William Lee Tipton (Cook Bayou, FL), His father is John William Capers Van Burean and many other middle names Tipton, and his father is Benjamin's son John. I always get so excited when I hear another family connection. Please email me and let me know where you fit into this line, and I am sure Shirley would love to hear from you! I don't write often, but I still try to remain connected as I am very interested in my family line. I have found my Pearson, Martin and Green Brown in the 1830-1860 census reports of Irwin, Pulaski, Early, Dooly and Worth Counties Georgia. While Tracking two more of my lines (Page and Phelps) in Randolph Co, GA, I found the Brown names I have listed below. I believe some of these may be my missing ancestors. I found the following Browns in the 1840 Randolph County Census as Heads of Household. They are not in the 1830 or 1850, only the 1840. Has anyone run across these names in their searches? I already had two lines at that time in Randolph (Page & Phelps), and the Pages married into the Browns a short time later. This, plus the same uncommon names leaves me looking for probably one missing generation to connect these Browns to mine. Any descendants out there? Anyone with any info on these Browns? Here they are with approximate birth years: Caesar Brown 1760/1770 John Brown abt 1763 Green Brown 1770/1780 Abraham Brown 1790/1800 Martin H. Brown 1790/1800 Isaac Brown 1790/1800 John P. Hey Charles. I have a lot of "married into" family names, but haven't run across a Hobbs in any of the documents I've gotten. Sorry. Bill
WBrownB, Even though my surname (Hobbs) was not on your list I wanted to inquire of you to see if you had seen any info on this line. I have Hobbs family that also left Randolph/Early Counties and went to Pasco County, Fl. via Colquitt, Ga. or Dothan, Al. Without boring everyone with too much info, perhaps some cousins out there will recognize some names and we can share info. Some of the names are not my direct line, so I don't have complete info on all, but I'm listing them to make the connections to share as much family info as possible with my cousins. These families were in Randolph, Washington, Early, Irwin & Pulaski Counties of Georgia by at least 1800, NC and SC before that and some migrated to the Polk/Pasco/Hernando/Sumter Counties of Florida by about 1865. Posted on: Early Co. Ga Biographies Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/EarlyBios?read=2 Surname: Williams, Chipstead, Davis, Butler, Barr ------------------------- * The Early County News June 14, 1900 THE OLD WHITE PILLARED COURT HOUSE Unlike the present imposing brick Court House, which sits in the center of the Public Square, the Old White Pillared Court House, built by Judge Thomas Williams in 1857-58 with the Old Confederate Flag Pole planted in front of it, was situated on the East Central side of the Public Square facing West, with North and South Main Streets extending across its front through the center of the Square. Judge Thomas Williams not only built the Old White Pillared Court House, he also helped cut and fashion the Old Confederate Flag Pole and it is also believed he was Master of Ceremonies on the day the pole was erected, May 16, 1861, as that day was a memorable occasion in Blakely. Now, who was Judge Thomas Williams? * The Early County News February 16, 1905 JUDGE THOMAS WILLIAMS Blakely's Oldest Citizen Died Sunday Afternoon Judge Thomas Williams, who was Blakely's o l d e s t citizen, died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Geo, E. Chips tead last Sunday afternoon in the 76th year of his age. Mr. Williams was born on the 10th of April 1815, in Chester, England. He came to the Provinces of North America (New Brunswick, Canada) when quite a boy, April 26, 1831; lived in the Province about nine years and in the meantime married Margaret Ann Barr of Ireland. ln July 1840 he left there for Georgia, and on the third day of October reached Fort Gaines, which was then a part of Early County, with his wife and one Child, who is now the wife of James Butler. Others of his children, born since he came to Early County; are Mrs. J. J. Jones, Mrs. Geo. E. Chipstead and Mr. John T.Williams, of Blakely and Mrs. Robert Davis, of Columbus. Judge Williams has resided in Early County since 1840, with exception of four years that he spent in the Confederate Army, proving a gallant and faithful soldier. He was at one time the mail bearer for General Gordon and remembered this fact with much pleasure. He built the present courthouse in the 50's, which is a monument to his careful and painstaking work. Probably one of the proudest memories of the old gentleman was the fact he constructed the Old Confederate flagpole that stands in front of the courthouse. After the war he went into the watch repairing and cleaning business, following this occupation up to a few months ago, when the infirmities and sickness combined to prevent his active employment. He has been bedridden off and on for the past year, his last attack carrying him off last Sunday afternoon as above stated. Up to a few years since Mr. Williams was prominently identified with the public affairs of Early County, and though not a lawyer, he was a number of times honored with the Judgeship of the County Court of Early County. His funeral took place Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, being conducted by the Masonic Lodge of Blakely, of which order he was a long-time member. His wife preceded him to the grave some years ago. He leaves a large posterity who has the sympathy of our people in their great bereavement. For almost fifty years the Old flagpole and the Old White Pillared Court House had been close buddies, standing side by side, what effected one, also effected the other. History records during that time both had played a prominent part in the affairs of Blakely and Early County, and now, the Old Flag Pole was going to lose his beloved buddy, to be supplanted by a handsome and commodious new Court House. A history of the Old courthouse, built by Judge Thomas Williams in 1857-58, would make interesting reading. Blakely was then but a struggling little village and the building was a handsome one in those days. But the hand of time had laid its touch upon the old structure and the thriving city that has grown up around it and in keeping with the growth and wealth of Early County demands that a newer and more commodious structure shall take its place. Many of the distinguished Judges who presided within its walls and able lawyers who pleaded at its bar have passed to their reward and a newer generation have grown up to take their place. The last court has been held in the old structure and in another twelve months a handsome brick and stone building will take its place. Thomas and Margaret Williams and their descendants. First Generation -------------------------------------------------- He married Margaret BARR, 8 May 1837 in England. Margaret was born in 1818 in Fungiven Ireland. 1864 would have been during the Civil War, things got misplaced and burned and ransacked, courthouses burned and such........most fellows never came back from the war....just an idea about any paper losses.......jh
Does anyone know if records such as this exist for Early Co Ga? I have never located a marriage record for the parents of my g-mother {1864} and would like to know just how to further explore this idea as this may be the case here. I did however, locate two marriages for the father later. Nowhere was there a license so far, for her mother to him, as I have found. 1860 they were both stuents at the Damascus Academy. Naomi
Patricia, I don't know about Early Co. but in researching my husband's family in Fannin Co., Ga, I was looking through the Inferior Court Records and found several "Bastardy Bonds" although they were not listed as such. I was browsing through the index and found his gg-grandmother's name so I flipped over to the page indicated and began to read. There were $750.00 bonds posted for each of her two daughters and were to remain in place until they reached the age of 14. You might try looking in the Inferior Court Records. Ida
Hi All, I've been reading alot of mail on another mailing list about "Bastardy Bonds" and was wondering if they existed for Early County. My great grandmother gave birth to my grandmother in 1905 when she was unmarried. I was wondering if one of these papers might have been filed. Does anyone know if they exist and where I might look for them. Patricia Parker I'm researching the following surnames: Layton, Strickland, McCormick, McCoy, Parker, Tharp, Birch. Concentration is in the South - North Carolina, Georgia, Florida.
