Ok, I have that: Reuben was son of Elisheba; Elisheba was DAU of Burgess and on down to Paul Harralson Sr. Reuben was son of Elkanah; Elkanah was SON of William and on down to Paul Jr. then to Paul Sr. Elisheba and Elkanah were kin.right? I also have a Polly Harralson, dau of Reuben and Kizzah. She married Henry Brown who married Kizzah Yawn, sister to Calvin Yawn. John William Harralson, son of Reuben married Elizabeth Clark. They had a dau Mary born abt 1840. I bet she'lll turn out to be the one who married Calvin Yawn. Then it seems that John William and Elizabeth Harralson's children married into the Buch and Purvis families which are also connected to each other. It's not a family tree, it's a kudzu vine!!!! 2. Hi Bill, I recently saw a reference to Livingston/Yawn info that you posted on the Dodge County website. Do you have any info regarding parents of Rutha Caroline Yawn or John S. Livingston, Sr? They are one set of my wife's paternal g-g-grandparents. One of her g-grandmothers was Nancy Ann Phelicia, one of their daughters. John

    2. Jen, it is great getting all of this Dodge County information online as it will be a big help to all of us researchers whose families were in Pulaski County and Dodge County. Joy has really put a lot of Georgia data online in the way of out of copyright county histories and also census indexes. She is a one woman dynamo and I appreciate all that she has done for Georgia researchers. Please convey my appreciation to her. Now if we can get some of our relatives to place some photos of our ancestors online. I know someone must have some photos of Charles Harrell and some of the others. I do have photos of Levi Holt Harrell, William Holt Harrell, Mary Jane Willcox Harrell, John Willcox, III, and a photo of a painting of John Willcox, I who owned and operated the iron foundry located on Deep River in Chatham County, NC. Julian Williams has many stories of these pioneer families along with photos of many ancestors which is online at Julian's "Old Jacksonville" site. Including a copy of the photo of both John Willcox's mentioned above and others. My great wish is to find photos of Elizabeth McKay, wife of Charles Harrell, a photo of Charles Harrell, Some images of the earlier Harrell's if they survived the years. Also would like to see some photos of the Harrell school and the students. One was published in a Dodge County newspaper some years ago and my own grandmother was in that one. It would be nice to see what some of the Harrell children looked like. Our Cousin Dr. Jim Burnham sent me some wonderful photos of Wright Harrell and his entire family taken at an early family reunion. I was very grateful to receive that one and will get it online one of these days so others can enjoy it. Eventually I will have a Harrell and allied families page back online. Someone said that there is a church that has a lot of photos of the early Dodge County residents. Anyone know about that? 2. Hezekiah Dowdy married Lucretia (Creasy) Yawn who was born in 1832 with whom he had ten children. The Dodge County Newspaper memorial for Creasy Dowdy gives a wealth of information on the family and is copied below. Creasy Dowdy died in 1909 and Hezekiah in Dodge County Georgia in September of 1878. His cause of death was consumption. Hezekiah is listed on the 1870 census as the head of household but his widow is the head of household in 1880. “Memoriam: Thursday October 21, 1909. On the seventh day of October, as the sun was casting its last rays from the West, the spirit of Mrs. Lucretia Yawn Dowdy, was borne by angels to the God who gave it. Mrs. Dowdy was born near the Flint River in Dooly County 77 years ago and in her girlhood was married to Mr. Hezekiah Dowdy who preceded her to the spirit world 31 years ago. She leaves ten children, five sons and five daughters, fifty-nine grandchildren and forty-four great grandchildren to mourn their loss but their grief is not like that of those who have no hope, for they have the blessed hope that she is resting in that home beyond the skies where sorrow and pain are not known. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Hopewell Church near those of her devoted companion. She has been a member of that church 54 years. Her nephew, Reverend W. H. Dowdy, in very appropriate and touching words, conducted funeral services.” I am trying to write a family history of my Dowdy line and can tell you that there are mistakes in all of the material I have consulted for my information. Mistakes in census records, mistakes in court records, Mistakes in newspaper accounts and mistakes in my text. However all of the records prove that our line was there at the time the text was written. We all do the best we can and are alwalys looking for improvement. The real fun of genealogy is in the chase. The Dowdy line will give you a run for your money. Happy New Year. Emma

Dodge County Newspaper Clippings; Vol VI, page 3143 Jan 2, 1941 editrion: Allen Yawn, one of Dodge County's oldest and most popular citizens, died at his home in Chauncey Tues. morning quite unexpectedly. He had enjoy good health for one one of his age until Monday afternoon when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He was a navtive of Dodge Cty, haveing been born 84 years ago, the son of the late Calvin and Mary Harralson Yawn and spent his entire life here. He is survived by the following children, his wife having died in April this year: Mrs. Bill Mann, Rochelle, Mrs B F Williamson; Mrs Callie Kin; Mrs Manning Pitts; Mrs M L Kirkley, two sons, George and R O Yawn all of dodge Cty; two brothers Will Yawn, Helena, and Elvie Yawn, one sister Mrs Carried Achord, Chauncey. Funeral services were helf from Elbethel Baptist Church We afternoon, conducted by Rev O A Grant. The following grandsons served as casket bearers: Willie Williams, Albert Williams; Sylvester Williams, Walter Williams, J C Mann, Raymond Kirkley. Interment was in the Church Cemetery. Orbit for Calvin Yawn: Nov 24, 1904: Mr Calvin Yawn died at the home of his son W R Yawn, of near Cox on Mon, the 21st inst, of dropsey......Mr Yawn was 77 years old leaves a wife and 8 children. Mrs J C Rogers and Mrs S T Rogers of Eastman are his daughters. Burial was at the Brown Cem. in Chauncey. I have a Sabra Yawn, wife of W D McArthur listed as a dau of Calvin Yawn. She was 77 when she died in 1937. Her orbit reads, dau of the late prominet pioneer citizens Mr and Mrs Calvin Yawn. ( the orbit could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time) There is a Sabra Yawn, age 9, on the 1870 Telfair census. She is listed with James and Lucy Yawn, who would be her grandparents. But the Burch Books have her as dau of Allen and Delilah Cadwell Yawn.Could be, from the census it's hard to tell; 1870 Telfair 181 181 Yawn, James, 74 Lucy 67 Elvin 22 Delila 31 Sarba 9 Burch Books also list Mary A, wife of Calvin, as a Harralson. It has her as first cousin to Ellen Harrelson (who was second wife of Charles Burch). I'm not very good at determing relationships, but I think that would mean that Ellen Harrelson and Mary A's fathers were brothers, as both were Harrelson, or it could mean that one of the unmarried sisters of Ellen's father had Mary A. You would think then that there would be a Mary Harralson age 10 on the 1850 census. I found two possibilites; one Mary Harralson, age 10, dau of John William and Elizabeth Clark Harralson, in Montgomery Cty. But this Mary would be sister to Ellen not first cousin. There was also a Mary Harralson, age 11, in Newton Cty, dau of Jesse and Mary Harralson. I've not done a lot of work on the Harralsons, but I think I remember reading somewhere that the Newton Cty and Telfair, Montgomery Harralsons were connected. If Mary was a Harrell----I found no Mary Harrells in Telfair in 1850; in Pulaski was Mary b! orn abt 1848;Mary A 1849; Mary A 1827; Mary A 1823 and Mary J 1849. None of the ages seem right to be Mary A born abt 1840. No Mary Harrells in Montgomery in 1850. Bernice

    2. In Mrs. Smallwood's book believe she did note the errors in Mrs. Cobb's book, but then again, errors are in the Smallwood books as I am in one of those and listed incorrectly by my Mother's maiden name instead of my father's surname and believe there are many other errors. But if you think about how difficult it is to get information about our family from our own elders and when we do it is in some cases incomplete or full of errors or guess work, you will realize how these ladies must have ran into the same when they were trying so hard to get the information on each of the people mentioned in their books. Joy has done a fantastic job of putting many books online and many census records for a lot of Georgia Counties and I for one appreciate her hard work and determination to get this data online. So thanks Joy for all of this material. Now maybe all of we distant cousins can post the corrected data online to compliment what these kind ladies, Mrs. Cobb and Mrs. Smallwood did for all of us. I have thanked Mrs. Smallwood many times though she was not around to hear my thanking her. Without her hard work so much of my own lines would be a mystery to me. I descend from the Harrell's, McKay's, McNeill's, Hendley's, Horton's, Rountree's, Conner's, Willcox's and many of the allied lines that go back to colonial SC, NC and VA. With the information that Mrs. Smallwood provided in her books I was able to trace the allied lines and many collateral lines that branch out from the above named families. I have the Horton's In America book and the Horton line is all wrong in Mrs. Smallwood's book and we do not descend from the Horton in Conn. but from one of Barnabus Horton's other sons down to David Horton of Wake County, NC who was the father of Amelia Ann (Olive?) Horton. I traced the Rountree's back to SC, NC, VA and England. Then all of their collateral lines in SC. If we use these early histories as a jumping off place to do our own research they serve a wonderful purpose. 2. There are many errors in this body of work. Mary Lou Burch Smallwood's "Burch, Harrell and Allied Families," I, and II provide additional information regarding most of these families mentioned in this earlier work by Mrs. Cobb. Though I appreciate very much Joy placing all of this data online, I do hope that everyone researching these families will also consult actual records and contact other researchers to find the corrections to the many errors. Mrs. Smallwood also has errors in her work as these women, though working very hard to provide this valuable information were sometimes given the wrong information by well meaning family members who did not have the correct names, dates, places and order of birth in families. I do not rely on early county or family histories but use them as clues to where to look for the actual records and then I go to those microfilmed copies of actual documents. And even in the case of actual documents often names are misspelled. IN CLOSING this history of Dodge County and her people, we note the progress that has been made along all lines in the sixty-two years since the creation of the county, and compare the conditions of today with those in the beginning. From the one-room school house we have progressed to modern, well equipped school buildings with only teachers employed who have college degrees. From a school attendance of less than a thousand there are now enrolled five thousand children, with forty-four modern school buses to transport them to and from school each day. We have also made wonderful strides in an agricultural way. From 950 bales of cotton produced in the early years we now produce something like twenty thousand bales per year. Before the advent of the boll weevil in 1920 the number of bales were thirty to thirty-five thousand per year. In the early days whiskey was sold openly in this county, and at one period there were twelve barrooms in the town of Eastman. These barrooms have been replaced by handsome business houses. From the little sandy trails of earlier days, which were just wide enough for a buggy or wagon to travel, we now have sixteen hundred miles of well kept public roads throughout the county, with twenty-three miles of paved highway extending across the entire county, which gives this section a paved highway direct from Atlanta through Eastman to Jacksonville, Florida. There is also a marked contrast in the way the prisoners are cared for today as compared to the long ago. Through our efficient County Commissioner, W. D. McCranie, the old prison cages have been abandoned and a handsome stockade of concrete, reinforced with steel, was erected in 1929. It is modern and sanitary in every respect, being equipped with shower baths and has well ventilated and properly heated sleeping quarters, with clean, comfortable cots and mattresses. Today all of the principal streets in the business section of Eastman are paved with concrete, and paved sidewalks extend throughout the entire residential section of the town.
