    1. [GADECATU-L] John Newton / Butler Cemetery

    3. I have verbal history that my great great grandfather John Haire (b. 1825) had a half-sister named Carrie, who married John Newton. John Haire married Eliza Butler and as a consequence they and many of their descendants are buried in Butler Cemetery between Whigham and Calvary... which of course is in Grady County now, but until 1905 it was in Decatur County. I visited Butler Cemetery last Sunday, and noticed that there is a grave marker near my great great grandmother Mary McQueen Autry's (b. 1832), that is inscribed "J.D. Newton, husband of Carrie Newton". Presumably that would be John Newton. There is no grave marker for Carrie Newton that I could see in Butler Cemetery, and I do not know if her last name was Haire or some other name... i.e., I do not know if John Haire and Carrie Newton were related through their father or mother. I'm not certain, but believe that John Haire and Eliza Butler came to Decatur County from Florida, and I know that they were in Liberty County, Florida, for awhile... but I do not know where in Florida the were from before that. I was hoping that if someone had information on John Newton and his wife Carrie that they could share... that might help me find the Haires that I have only been trying to find for 25 years, now... <G> Richard White Tallahassee
