Uncle Bob Tatum made the firey peech in the house during the beginning of the Civil War that if the state of Georgia didn't secede from the union then Dade County would secede from the state of Georgia. As the story goes, he then came home, called the men together and they voted for Dade County to secede from the state. After the War was over it was sorta of forgotten about until 1945 when Dade Co decided to return to the state of Georgia. There was a big to do over it and it was broadcast around the world via radio... we're talking about a major celebration here. However, no records have ever been found to prove that Dade County actually did secede from the State. Really, people have combed state records trying to prove it was all a made up story. There was a Robert Tatum and he was either in the house or senate during the beginning of the Civil War. Personally, I think it is a wonderful story and don't know if it happened or not. There was so much confusion during that time period it could have happened and not recorded as I sure many things were not. The state of Georgia built the road across Lookout Mountain during the late 1930's, early 1940's plus the schools received state money and people voted in the same state elections as everyone else. So, if it did happened or didn't, we were still a part of the state during all of those years during the War and afterward. Dade County has the nickname as being "The Independant State of Dade" or "The Lost State of Dade". People born in the county during those years are still considered to have been born in Georgia. The only thing that happened to our records were the trying to survive courthouse fires... April 1853 and 21 Nov 1863 and maybe a contained fire the latter part of the 1890's. If anyone is interested in the complete story, I will be glad to post it.
