Betty, the Bates did not come into Dade Co until after 1850. I didn't find Thomas Jefferson Bates on the 1850, 1860, 1870 or 80. James A. Bates who was 61 on the 1860 census was born in VA and he is buried here in Dade Co. There is a man in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who is a descesdant of James A. Bates and has done a lot of research on them. I think there were BATES in Hamilton Co TN (next door to Dade) have you checked there?
