I think the one they were referring to was in Dade Cty - is there more than one, I understood it was on Durham Rd at the block house - which belongs to another of my Evans family (or used to) - there is a man who lives on Durham Rd (Corez Harmon) I talked a long time to him, he used to work for my grandfathers brother, "Lack", he showed me all around and said if I came back he would take me down into the woods, he knew a lot about that area - we picked blackberries off the vine, he showed me whre the old home place used to be and some of the entrances to the mines - delilah evans At 09:12 3/8/01 -0500, you wrote: >Delilah, You're right, the tree is still there on Durham Rd (Walker Co) or >it was a year or so ago. Durham Road runs east/west... from Highway 157 (east side of the mountain) to Scenic Highway (west side of the mountain). Over half of Durham Road is in Walker County. The tree that was pointed out to me as being the hanging tree was in Walker Co but there could have very well been two. I know who Mr Harmon is and have talked with him. He is a very interesting man to talk with. The commissary and most of the mining buildings were in Walker Co, near the Dade Co line. Except for slag piles there isn't anything there now. As heavily wooded as it is, it is hard to believe it was once a busy mining town with houses everywhere. There was a railroad that carried the coal from these mines, northward around Lula Lake. It then made a "U" turn at the east brow running south, then southeast off the mountain. From there it finally ended up in Chickamauga at the coke ovens. When we were growing up in Chattanooga Valley we would hike to the top of the mountain, walk the old railroad to Lula Lake just to spend the afternoon swimming. It was a lot of fun and I wish children now could do things like that. This was really OT. Sue, on behalf of all of us GADADE-L list users, I must thank you for all of the interesting information you are providing. Thank you SO much! Those of us who have not been fortunate enough to visit our Dade County, but ARE fortunate enough to have ancestors who lived there, are thankful for you. We appreciate your kindness to share your information with us and enlighten us to facts that will never be found in "vital records". THANK YOU!...Jo T.
