Gil, to answer you question why the spacing between deaths and a funeral service, I really don't know but have a fairly good idea. Both of Thos. Payne's daughters died of typhoid fever as well as other people during that time period. These two deaths were in Jan and Feb (cold months here) and couple that with the fear of typhoid fever spreading, I could understand why they would wait for a service. The funeral service was probably more what we refer today as a memorial service. I've seen other references to funeral services long after a death. Believe it or not, but it was an all day event, food was brought for dinner on the grounds and except for the purpose everyone had a good time. Linda has already answered regarding the Payne burials at Byrd's Chapel. There are a number of unmarked graves but if any records were ever kept we have yet to find them. However, from what I've been told there weren't any kept. There is a Payne Cemetery in Trenton. I don't know of any connection it might have to this Thos Payne family if any.
