    3. Yes, there is an Amanda Jane Chadwick who married Isaac Thomas Payne December 12, 1888 in DeKalb Co, AL. I have noted that she was born November 28, 1864, the daughter of William Chadwick and Agga White. I have five known children born to that marriage between 1894 and 1904. I hope you will share what you know of this family and if there were more children than the five I have. If this Amanda is your G-Grandmother, then her death in 1918 would make her about 54 years of age when she passed from this life. Please stay in touch, and thank you for your response. 2. Gil, to answer you question why the spacing between deaths and a funeral service, I really don't know but have a fairly good idea. Both of Thos. Payne's daughters died of typhoid fever as well as other people during that time period. These two deaths were in Jan and Feb (cold months here) and couple that with the fear of typhoid fever spreading, I could understand why they would wait for a service. The funeral service was probably more what we refer today as a memorial service. I've seen other references to funeral services long after a death. Believe it or not, but it was an all day event, food was brought for dinner on the grounds and except for the purpose everyone had a good time. Linda has already answered regarding the Payne burials at Byrd's Chapel. There are a number of unmarked graves but if any records were ever kept we have yet to find them. However, from what I've been told there weren't any kept. There is a Payne Cemetery in Trenton. I don't know of any connection it might have to this Thos Payne family if any. If I come across anything else on them I'll post it for you all. Sue

    3. Judith, It might be a good idea to check out the Dekalb Co. boards. If you go to the GenWeb site and post you will be posting on RootsWeb. If you are interested in the Chadwick family, I can help you. That is how I came across the information on the Paynes actually. I have a Chadwick ancestor. I have a survey of the Byrd's Chapel Cemetery and I only saw 4 Paynes buried there. It's a very small cemetery. They are Conrad Payne and his wife and his son W.C. and his wife Doris. Doris was my mother's secretary for several years. Many members of the Conrad Payne family live here in Dade Co. now. Why don't you e-mail me at lanew@tvn.net and I'll send you what you need on the Chadwicks. 3. Dear Sue: Please know of my deep appreciation for the news items you have shared today. I am so grateful for your consideration of my long search for any clues to the remnants of this family. At this time, I do not have a date or place for the death of Thomas J. Payne. Now that I have a few more leads, I hope to learn more as we work through these new clues. I will post my findings on the Dade and DeKalb websites as I find more. Sue, what can you tell me about the Byrd Chapel that is referenced in the final news item? Do you have a listing of burials near that site? Perhaps, this was the family's chosen burial place for other members, as well. I have also been told that there is a Payne cemetery in the area--what do you know about its location and holdings? I would like to visit this area in our next trip to Tennessee. Thanks so much for any and all that you find. 3. Good Morning, Linda: You have my most sincere thanks for sharing the information you found on my Payne family connections from the Dade/DeKalb stateline communities. Since this most recent flurry of activity has surfaced on the Dade Message Board, perhaps I should also renew my interests over in the DeKalb Message Board, as well. Is it better to send my query for that locale to the Rootsweb site for DeKalb Co, or to the GenWeb site? Which is the most active at this time? If you have any extended connections to any of this Payne line, from which you have shared the data, please extend my appreciation to anyone else who might be able to share from their own collection. I will be working harder now on this family--now that I have identified the descendants of two of the siblings--to try and complete my findings so that it can be shared with any who have interest in this line. Perhaps the ones we need to locate are living far away from this family's origin. Do you know if I would be wise to investigate any interest from the Chadwick side of this family? Thanks again, please stay in touch. 1. Re: [GADADE] Researching Southern Claims Commission Records
    2. Gil, thanks for sending this site info... I, for one, wasn't aware that it was up. Dade County had thirteen to apply but only four were approved. I've read the four that were approved but would especially like to read the nine that were disallowed as Gatalin Stevens was one of them. None are related to me but like reading them anyway. Henry Killian Bennett, one of those approved, was extremely hard on his son, Shannon Alexander, (I think was the son's name or something near that), who joined the C.S.A. Army. In fact he disowned him. After the war the son went to AR and as far as I know never returned here. Another one of his son's, Joseph A. Bennett, joined the C.S.A. also but came home after he was released when captured at Vicksburg. Joseph signed a statement that he never really supported the Southern Cause. Funny, but about five/six years ago, I know a man who joined the Sons of Confederate Veterans on Joseph's service record. I don't think he knew of the statements Joseph made on his father's claim. Joseph went on to become Ordinary of Dade County for many years. He had the most beautiful handwriting I've ever seen and I believe I would recognize it anywhere. He also served as Secretary for the Trenton Masonic Lodge, #179, for several years. My gr-gr-grandmother, Eleanor Rawlings, was one of those approved in Walker County. She owned property in the McLemore Cove area and I almost cried when I read her claim as it was so sad. The generations today will never know what hardships their ancestors endured during that terrible War. Thanks again, I appreciated it. 1. Re: [GADADE] Odian Castleberry
    2. No, Gil, this is the same Odian Castleberry who was in Dade County for a short time. He moved over into Walker County and it is believed he died there. He first moved into the McLemore Cove area (aka Fricks Gap on earlier censuses) then (I think) over in the Rock Springs area. Could be wrong about that. Betty Johnson, head of the local history and genealogy dept at the LaFayette Library, in LaFayette, GA., is also researching Odian Castleberry. We were talking about him this past Saturday.
