    1. [GADADE] Mary Caroline Mathis
    2. I have a Caroline Mathis born in 1842. She is the daughter of John Elijah (E.J.) Mathis and Elvira McDonough Mathis. They are often listed as Mathews/Matthews. She was born in TN, listed in 1850 and 1880 in Hamilton County, TN with her parents. I haven't located her in 1860 and I'm not sure where she is in 1870. I may have forgotten to add her to my files if she was living with her parents. I do have them in 1870 in Hamilton County. I haven't seen any record of her marrying. She is listed as single in 1880. Do you know anything of your Mary Caroline's parents? When did she marry William H. Smith? Thanks, Georgia Mathis Cummons

I have been told maybe either Dade or Crawford County. He married a Mary Caroline Matthews/Mathis, she was born 1844. William died 12/8/1907 and is buried in Payne Cemetery in Dade County. He was in the Calvary in the Civil War. I do know that his horse was shot out from under him and he walked in blood above his ankles to get back to his company. If anyone has any information would be greatly appreciated, please e-mail me at ddslr1120@hormail.com.

    3. Dade County GA lies in the extreme northwest corner of Georgia. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north and Alabama to the west. Dade County was formed in 1837 from the western portion of Walker County. It was named after Major Francis Langhorne Dade who was killed in an ambush during the Second Seminole War in Florida in 1835. The county seat is Trenton ----- Original Message ----- From: "James&Linda Sanford" <jsowlhaven@att.net> To: <GADADE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 28, 2003 6:26 PM Subject: [GADADE] Francis Dade > Hi. 3. No, the spelling isn't correct. It's Dade. It's named for Sir Francis Dade; he's the same person Dade Co., FL is named for, I believe. 3. Ronnie: I had lost contact with you. I am curious if that Betsey Bostain is related to Jehu. Do you know? The Francis Morgan that married Jehu Bostain had a sister that married a James Alexander Hartline. The same James Alexander that was the son of George and Betsey. George Bostain was in Rowan Co. in 1810 (p. 39). Do you see a connection? I am sure that there is one. Take care, Paul R.L. 2. To Paul and other Hartline relatives, James Alexander and Nancy L Hartline are my husband's ggg grandparents. His gg grandmother was their daughter Rebecca Ann who married Gilbert Monroe Mason. His g grandfather, Lewis Alexander Mason, is also buried in the Hartline Cemetery. He is related to most of the individuals in the Hartline Cemetery. I'm going out of town and will be gone for several days. After I return I'd love to share info and discuss theories with any one who is interested in these lines, including the O'Neals, Murrays, and Howards. Thanks, Sarah Roach DavidRoach@aol.com

    3. I am a descendant of James Alexander Hartline and Nancy Morgan Hartline also. Their son, John P., is my 2nd great grandfather. James Alexander Hartline was the son of George Hartline, born in 1794 in Rowan County, North Carolina. His first wife was Betsy Bostain. His second wife was Joanah Dearing. Also there are 2 more Hartlines buried in the cemetery in unmarked graves. John P. Hartline (1840-?) and his wife, Paralee Serena Russell (1840-1906) are buried there. Their granddaughter tried to show me the graves, but was unable to find them. (This was in the 1980's) She remembered them as being "near a big cedar tree."
