Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ua.2ADI/408.1 Message Board Post: Lana, I don't know if John "Doc" Stephens and Gatlin Stephens were brothers or not. Gatlin Stephens settled in the lower Rising Fawn area (or Clovedale area) of Dade County while Doc did not. You asked about the courthouse records... Because of two courthouse fires (April 1853 and Nov 1863) our deed records begin in 1853. However, many deeds were re-recorded or were recorded very late so we have a lot prior to the 1853 date going back into the 1840's. There are three exceptions to this: Deed books A, B, and E. Those are missing. The deeds survived the Nov 1863 fire. Our marriage records begin in 1866 with a few recorded late from 1865 and one from 1863. Only two old probate books survived the Nov 1863 fire. There are no "loose" probate records prior to 1895. It was said the courthouse burned again in 1895 but this can't be true as it was torn down in 1925 to make way for the one we now use. There could have been a "contained" fire in the Ordinary Office (now Probate) which could account for the loss of the probate records prior to 1895. I have recorded every burial site in Dade County that we can locate. Some burials sites have no tombstones what-so-ever. I have not put them on any web site but will start putting them on the Dade County Historical Society's site as soon as we have it up and running... hopefully before too much longer. Along with cemetery information will be book b marriage records; obits and other courthouse records. It takes time transcribing and formatting web pages. Gatlin Stephens' grave is marked. Can I look something up for you? I have seen some of the recordings you have done for DeKalb County... or at least I thought it was you. Sue Dade County GA

I do have more on the Holland line, but am at a dead end with Doc. What records are available at the courthouse? Are any researchers in Dade doing cemetery surveys? The genweb.com tombstone project for Dade is EMPTY except for partial transcriptions I put on there. I am pretty sure Doc is a brother of Gallatine Stephens as a John and Gallatine, brothers, signed a legal document together. Anybody know anything or anywhere I can search? I have always heard that they came from SC to TN to Dade Co., GA and then some went to DeKalb Co., AL and possibly Jackson Co., AL.

I recently saw this in a Marion County TN book and thought I would post it.... the book is on early settlers ~ Sequatchie families. Goodson Wheeler, son of David and Rachel Evans McDaniel, was married three times: Naomi Young, Rachael Longacre, and thirdly....Elizabeth Blevins, who survived him. He died Jan 23, 1887 and is buried in Marion County TN. Is Elizabeth Blevins from the Dade County Blevins line? This line interests me because I believe that Goodson's sister Cynthia McDaniel married Simeon Wheeler. Simeon and Cynthia would have a son William D Wheeler and William D married Julie Ann Allison (Allison, my line - Julie Ann the daughter of William and Catherine Allison). William D and Julie Ann would name their first son, Goodson. Simeon and William D are on the 1860 Dade County census. Gil
