    1. Re: [GADADE] the Dade Co Historical book
    2. Dennie, I'm sorry you have had computer problems... I know the feeling as I did last year for several months before everything crashed. However, to update you and everyone else... We have the library one evening a week for 1 to 1-1/2 hours to type and proof read, trying to get everything on disc. Sometimes it is only one other person and myself, then sometimes 2 to 4 others come in to help... but we are trying to do our best. Those who come in are volunteers and I appreciate their help. We're trying to have anything on disc and ready to go to the publishers by mid summer. And, if anyone would like to submit an article(s) with or without photographs, please either email or mail (USPS) within the nex two months to the Dade County Historical Society, PO Box 512, Trenton, GA 30752. Email: dadecohistsoc@yahoo.com Sue -----Original Message----- From: dennie <dennie@corgi.net> Sent: Feb 28, 2004 4:28 PM To: GADADE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GADADE] the Dade Co Historical book I have been off this list for a long time, so I may just be out of the loop. BUT whatever. I need to know what the status is of the publishing of the "new" Dade Co GA history book. I purchased one years ago. Then there was a problem with the publisher. Then there were my personal problems. (My computer died and my email addresses went with it to the great beyond.) Now I have no book and no knowledge of what is happening. Help. Help. I get confused sometimes til I get out the paperwork and look at it. It was the 1880 census for Dekalb and apparantly my relative said she seemed to be living with and uncle, named William J. Parker . Another one of her mothers husbands possibly had the last name Williams. The uncle she was living with was William J. Parker and his wife Eveline. JoEllen

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ua.2ADI/420.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I have the 1870 DeKalb Co AL census... the only Bates is a black male living in another household. There was an Ellen Bates who married a John Dodson in Dade Co on 7 Feb 1886 (marriage register book B, pg 502). On the Dade County 1860 census the following is listed: Salola Farm PO, hh 353: James A. Bates, 61 VA Martha, 56 GA Elizbeth, 26 TN Minerva, 23 TN Elisa, 17 TN William, 15 TN Ezekiel, 11 TN 1870 Dade Co Trenton PO - HH 230 James A. Bates, 71 VA Martha, 67 GA Rachel M., 28 TN Mary A., 26 TN Ezekiel H., 21 TN By 1870 James A. Bates was certainly old enough that he could have had a 4 year old granddaughter. His two sons, William and Hezekiel both married way after 1870, however. Both Walker County and Chattooga County has a small section that touch DeKalb Co AL. I think this is the web site for Georgia county maps... www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfol/histcountymaps/Statemap.htm Rather long... but check it out and that will give you an idea of counties here in NW Georgia. If you find any more info that you think will help, either email me or post and I'll try to check it out for you. Sue

I haven't checked on rolls, because I figured that not knowing his first name would hinder me finding anything. My mom's family has just always said that he was a full blood Cherokee, and I think that they believe the reason she really married him is because she was in her thirties and wanted a child. They didn't stay together and my GGrandma ended up in Dekalb County Alambama, where she ended up marrying my GGrandpa. The biggest problem is she died when she was 32 in an asylum in Tuscaloosa. I got her records hoping they might say who her parents were but they didn't say anything about her father and only mentioned her mothers health and not her name other than Mrs. Bates. It is so frustrating! I was hoping so much that maybe someone might have been told that their ggrandfather or something had a child from another marriage and maybe the pieces of the puzzle would come together. I'm not even sure which part of GA. My uncle just said that he lived and died in the corner of the state and I believe it was where Ga, AL and TN. meet, but am not positive. I'm sure it is something that I will probably never find out, but I will keep trying. I have a distant relative who seems to have found her on the 1880 Dekalb Co. Alabama census. I'm not sure about 1870. She was born in in 1866, so they may have already gone to Alabama by 1870. I'm just not sure. Thank You, JoEllen

I did not find an Eva Bates on our censuses, 1870 and 1880. For Eva's father to have been listed as a "full blood" Cherokee both parents would have had to have been full bloods OR his mother a full blood. Have you checked any of the rolls? Sue

Surnames: Bates Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ua.2ADI/420 Message Board Post: I have a problem. My great grandmother was Eva Bates, before she married my ggrandfather. The problem is I know very little of her parents. Her father was supposed to have been a teenage full blood Cherokee who married a 30 something year old Dutch lady. I was told her father pretty much lived most of his life somewhere in the northern part of GA. Sounds to me like one of the two northern corners. And probably died there. No one knows or can remember the Dutch ladies name, so the only name we have is Eva's maiden name of Bates. I am not even sure if this is her fathers name. It sounds like her parents didn't stay together long and her mother married a couple of time at least after the first time, so it may be a step fathers name. Eva was supposed to have been born in 1866 in GA. Since her father was so young when he first married. I wonder if he wasn't married again and had other children and possibly this story has been told in that family. Has anyone ever heard this story.! If so, I would love to find out his name and more about him Thanks, JoEllen Glenn
