    3. Delilah, There was a "hanging tree" and I think it is still there or at least that is what I've been told. Durham is part Walker Co and part Dade Co... most of it especially where the mine openings were would be in Walker Co. The hanging tree Paul may be strung from is in Trenton in the valley. :o) Sue ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 11:02 AM Subject: Re: [GADADE] Can someone help with county info? > When I was visiting on Durham Rd - it was mentioned that the 'hanging tree' > was still there - although I guess I missed it > delilah evans > > > > > > At 08:02 3/7/01 -0500, you wrote: > >Hi Paul, I think maybe the "hanging tree" might still be in Trenton too. > > > >Sue > >----- Original Message ----- > >From: Paul R.L. 2. Bill & Emily O'Neal
    3. Am searching burial spot of William B. O'Neal 3/26/1845 - 1/4/1914. Death certificate says he is buried in Hooker, GA. I don't find him listed in the cemetery book for Dade County. Does anyone know if there is anyone with records of who is buried in Hooker Cemetery or is there more than one cemetery there? Perhaps he is in an unmarked grave. Any help appreciated. William E. 2. Beverly Forrester
    3. Hi Delilah, Well, if you ask some of older native Dade Countians this question you will probably hear the story about Uncle Bob Tatum. Uncle Bob Tatum made the firey peech in the house during the beginning of the Civil War that if the state of Georgia didn't secede from the union then Dade County would secede from the state of Georgia. As the story goes, he then came home, called the men together and they voted for Dade County to secede from the state. After the War was over it was sorta of forgotten about until 1945 when Dade Co decided to return to the state of Georgia. There was a big to do over it and it was broadcast around the world via radio... we're talking about a major celebration here. However, no records have ever been found to prove that Dade County actually did secede from the State. Really, people have combed state records trying to prove it was all a made up story. There was a Robert Tatum and he was either in the house or senate during the beginning of the Civil War. Personally, I think it is a wonderful story and don't know if it happened or not. There was so much confusion during that time period it could have happened and not recorded as I sure many things were not. The state of Georgia built the road across Lookout Mountain during the late 1930's, early 1940's plus the schools received state money and people voted in the same state elections as everyone else. So, if it did happened or didn't, we were still a part of the state during all of those years during the War and afterward. Dade County has the nickname as being "The Independant State of Dade" or "The Lost State of Dade". People born in the county during those years are still considered to have been born in Georgia. The only thing that happened to our records were the trying to survive courthouse fires... April 1853 and 21 Nov 1863 and maybe a contained fire the latter part of the 1890's. If anyone is interested in the complete story, I will be glad to post it. 3. OK Sue: Post the story. Do you mean to post the article by Dr. Merton Coulter, Georgia Historian, ha. Bet you don't dare. Anyway, his article is in the library at Trenton, I know, I gave it to the library. Also, are you going to post the court records of Dade for the years right after the Civil War when the citizens were begging for aid from the state. Doesn't read like they considered themselves Free. Or are you going to point out how many of those veterans got pensions from the state of Georgia. Old stories die hard regardless of who made them up or how totally illogical they may be. Paul Bet this means I have to slip in and out of the county now. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beverly Forrester" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2001 8:02 PM Subject: Re: [GADADE] Can someone help with county info? > Hi Delilah, > > Well, if you ask some of older native Dade Countians this question you will > probably hear the story about Uncle Bob Tatum. 1. Re: [GADADE] Can someone help with county info?
    2. Beverly Forrester
    3. Becky, my name is Sue Forrester and I live in Dade County. When you ask for "blanks to be filled in" are you referring to County History, Name Origin and Societies? You do have a couple of things that need correcting. The state required birth and death records beginning in 1919. And Dade Co did have several filed beginning with 1919 forward. However, it wasn't until 1927 that the county started keeping a copy of the certificates that were filed with the state. In Dade County birth and death records are kept in the Office of Probate. Dade County had two courthouse fires. The first was in April 1853 and the second one was 21 November 1863. I can document both of those. There may have been a contained fire ca 1895 but I have not been able to find any information regarding it. Marriage records began in 1866. Land Records began in April 1853. A number of deeds that had been recorded prior to the April 1853 fire were re-recorded afterward the fire. Land records survived the 1863 fire. We have two probate books (one dated from 1853 and the other dated from 1855) that survived the 1863 fire. None before 1853 survived. There are NO loose probate papers until ca 1900. I'm not sure what court records you are taking about that began in 1854. Vital records: refer to the above birth and death records and they are located in the Probate Office. The Probate Office is located in the Justice Building and I do not know their mailing PO Box number. However, the one telephone number listed goes into this office. The deeds are located in the Clerk of Superior Court Office which is in the old courthouse building. Again, I do not know the mailing PO box number. We do have an active Dade County Historical Society. Their address is PO Box 512, Trenton, GA 30752. There is a small informal group who meets to share genealogy info. We have no officers and as I said it is very informal. Delta Genealogical Society which is based out of the Rossville Public Library (Walker Co) is a tri-state organization covering northwest GA, southeast TN and northeast AL. Their address is 504 McFarland Ave., Rossville, GA 30741. They publish a journal three times a year. I can give you the name origin and if you will tell me what you want in the nature of county history, I can do that also.
