Hi List, My parents lived at Durham when this lenching occured. This was before i was born. They moved to Letcher Co. Ky about 1921.This happen before they moved. I took my dad back to DURHAM about 1960. Most all the houses were gone. Part of the old company store was still standing. While we were there he showed me where this happened and told me the story. He saw the lenching. A young black baseball player from Chattanooga,Tn played on a team at Durham. He stopped and starting talking to this white girl. Some of the white men saw him and accuse him of trying to rape her.My dad didn't think he had done any thing wrong. A big mob of whites gathered and took him away from the sheriff and lenched him.He said, a lot of men shot him full of holes after he was dead. I remember one of the men that shot him , LITTLE BILL PARKER. My father said that they would swing him around and shoot him some more. My dad JAMES E. DOYLE WORKED AT THE MINES . signed by Jack Doyle
I was very amused when I returned home this weekend and found all the messages about the "Hanging Tree" on Durham Road. The tree was located on the property that my grandparents, Mitchell and Dorothy (Evans) Priddy owned for about 50 years until about 1990. The story that my mother and the grandchildren grew up with was that the hanging occurred in the early 1920's when my grandmother was a teenager. The woman who was reportedly raped worked at the commissary post office for the mines. A black man was accused of raping her and was chased through the woods and eventually caught on the bluff to Fugat's (Fuggat's?) Creek which runs about 50 to 100 yards into the woods from the tree. He was then hung and left there for some time while local men took shots at his body. The reason the tree never grew was probably from all the bullets fired into it. My mother remembers that you could still see where the bullets went into the tree many years later. There was never a trial and later it was local gossip that it actually was not rape but that the two people were actually just caught in a unacceptable relationship. The fact that my great grandfather participated in the lynching and shooting of the man is one of those things that doesn't make you very proud when you dig into your family history. Denise DeBerry
Sue, Yes, I would like to have a copy of the Durham pages and the Valley ones also. I think I can afford the price. Can I send you a SASE? Just let me know the address. My mother just reminded me of a book she had given me many years ago. I had read it then but had forgotten about it. The book was written in 1977and is 'The Old Miner and His Guardian Angel' by Earnest Hollingsworth (of Walker County). I just this year found out that we are related. But so is everybody in the county. The book contains a good insight into early county life and particularly the Durham mines where he worked for a while. It even has one picture of the area around the mine. I would hope that both Dade and Walker libraries have this book. I need to reread it.

Thanks, Sue, and keep us posted if it comes up again - I certainly do not want Trenton or any other part of Dade Cty (where my ancestors walked) made into a landfill. delilah evans/avans At 18:19 3/11/01 -0500, you wrote: >Delilah and others out of Dade County... > >What Earlene is talking about is a beautiful piece of farm property (the old >Dave L. Yesterday afternoon I sat in on some interviews with some of the older people in the Durham/Ascalon area talking about growing up in the mining area and working in these mines. Mostly they just told how populated it once was and what it was like to work in the mines. The oldest man was 92. However, although these people worked in the mines and lived in the area, their time was on the down side of the mining operations. The height of the operation was probably between 1890 and 1905. I always learn many things from interviews like this and enjoy listening. I never knew until yesterday that there were coke ovens here on top of the mountain that were used before the railroad was built going off the mountain to the ovens in Chickamauga. Some of them are still standing but in a very overgrown area. I did see a few of them. The last train carrying coal off the mountain was ca 1944 (more or less). The last mine to shut down was in 1965. Something else that surprised me. I asked several of the people if they remembered the names of some of the early residents. They gave one or two names but not enough to help. Delilah, one man did tell me he remembered Lack Evans/Avans and that he was a constable at one time. To those of you who wanted a copy of the Durham booklet, I was loaned a copy for a few days in order to make copies. If anyone is interested, the copy charge will be 5c a page plus postage. I think there are 8 pages including front and back... I left it in my truck so I wouldn't forget it when I went to Fort Oglethorpe to Office Depot. Duke, since you are originally from the Chattanooga Valley like me, I was also loaned a three page article that was written in 1915 about the Valley. Would you like a copy of that also? Charles Austin, shut your eyes and skip over this part... I had been shown the "hanging tree" before but was also shown again yesterday. I made a picture. It is about 1/4 of a mile on Durham Rd off Lula Lake Rd (Hwy 157). Two or three of the people said that after the hanging the tree never did grow anyone. A man was accused of rape... I was not clear if he stood trail or not, I don't think he did. Sue Forrester
Delilah and others out of Dade County... What Earlene is talking about is a beautiful piece of farm property (the old Dave L. Brown farm) in the Wildwood area on Highway 11. The present owners had said they are going to let the property be developed. BFI in Chattanooga had an option to purchase in order to open a land fill bringing the garbage from the Chattanooga area here to dump. The residents of the area had a community meeting at which BFI withdrew the option for the time being. However, although there is a temporary halt it doesn't mean that something like this can't happen in the future. There was a Cemetary on New Home Loop Rd. several years ago....it was on the Stallings family land. One of the Stallings family members had the cemetary destroyed. Now, recently an older lady who lives down the road from this cemetary told me that when her oldest daughter was a baby, she would walk her over there and they would pick up sticks and rack leaves back from the graves. And, "yes" they had headstones. She remembers only one name being there.....there were other names....but she only remembers the name Murphy. The lady said when the road was built through that area, it was cut to the left more than usual because they couldn't go through the cemetary. Over the years....I've heard the cemetary was started due to a motel fire in that area, several people including some children were killed. You may want to look to that area for some of your missing Murphy's in the Cole City area. Suzie

Thank you,Thank you, Thank you!!!!! You've told me about Schaichs I didn't even know existed! The John and Julia that you mentioned are my husband's great grandparents, their son, John Jr. and his wife are buried at Lomenick Cemetary in East Ridge, she was Decie Elliott, their daughter, Ruth, is buried with them. Sorry I didn't mention where I am, I'm at Germantown and I-24, I lived in Ringgold for awhile so I'm kind of familiar with the N.Ga. area. Again, bless you, you've made my day, now I'm out the door and on my way!! Karen Chastain Schaich.
Beverly, Read your email and went to the site. found several obituaries I need. However, the cost is a bit steep for a simple obit copy ($11.00 each). I really appreciate your reference though as it was still a big help. Karen, Mission Ridge Cemetery is in Walker County GA not Dade. I don't know where in Chattanooga you are as I could give you directions from your area. However, starting at a central point of Rossville Blvd and I-24... travel south on Rossville Blvd crossing into GA in the middle of the city of Rossville; get in the right lane. When you come to where Rossville separates (the Rossville Post Office is at the end of Rossville Blvd) bear to the right traveling onto McFarland Ave. Travel south on McFarland Ave for about 4 miles. When you come to the intersection of McFarland Ave and Highway 2, cross over Highway 2. At the next travel light, turn right onto Mission Ridge Rd. Continue south on Mission Ridge Rd maybe 3/4 miles. Watch for a large Baptist Church on the right side of the road. Mission Ridge Cemetery is at this church. Julia A. Schaich, John Schaich, and Lawrence M. Dunwoody are buried there. There tombstones read: Julia A. Schaich, 15 May 1868 - 28 Feb 1946 John Schaich 6 Jan 1860 - 3 Sep 1923 Lawrence M. Dunwoody 10 Jan 1910 - 17 Mar 1946 Ga Pvt 1 Cl. Engineer There are some other Schiachs buried there and their stones read: Melterin Pauling 1 Sept 1890 - 8 Mar 1912 Daughter of John & Julia Schiachs, From Mother Arms to Arms of Jesus Grady Schiachs 17 Mar 1900 - 24 Dec 1914 Son of John & Julia Schiachs Infant Schiachs 10 June 1893 - 19 June 1893 Daughter of John &Julia Schiachs Infant Schiachs 1 Jan 1896 - 1 June 1896 Son of John & Julia Schiachs Infant Schiachs 23 Dec 1898 - 23 Dec 1898 Dughter of John & Julia Schiachs These last graves do not appear to be with the parents and you will probably have to seach for them. The Cemetery is not that large so they shouldn't be hard to find. Have you checked for obits in the Chattanooga paper? You can go to the index online by typing www.lib.chattanooga.gov Click on the community page, then on the obituary page. When the next page opens, go to the bottom of the page and click on data base. When the search page opens, type in last name first and be sure to set the search on "browse". These names are typed into the data base exactly as they appeared in the paper. If you put your search on browse of the Schaich data base you can browse through all of that surname. If you do find one, you will then have to go to the 3rd floor of the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Library to pull the newspaper microfilm in order to read the full obituary or get a copy. OR you can order by mail. Ordering instructions are given.
