Betty, the Bates did not come into Dade Co until after 1850. I didn't find Thomas Jefferson Bates on the 1850, 1860, 1870 or 80. James A. Bates who was 61 on the 1860 census was born in VA and he is buried here in Dade Co. There is a man in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who is a descesdant of James A. Bates and has done a lot of research on them. I think there were BATES in Hamilton Co TN (next door to Dade) have you checked there? Donna, William T. Sammons joined Co H., 21st GA Vol Inf, Army of Northern VA, CSA also known as the "Silver Grays" or Yancey Invincibles". His rank was that of 1st Sgt and he died 30 Oct 1864. If you get a copy of his military record it should tell you where he died and his burial site. Nancy is listed as a widow on the 1860 census of Dade Co. with the following children: Ephraim (17), James M., (15), John R., (13), William F., (11), George L. (9), Lorra E., (6), Joanna (3). I don't know if these are her children or not. Mitilda Sammons is listed next door to Nancy in the household of Jane Ross (63). L.M. Sammons (this may have been Lewis... don't know for sure) joined Co F., 34 GA Vol Inf, Army of TN CSA. He was a pvt and died in a Union prison. I don't have any more info on him but again you could get his military record. Charles E. Austin (and I think Bill Emmett also) have done a lot of research on the Wilkinsons. We also have a book on the Street family. I don't know who has the cemetery list, but I have several Asburys, Richmonds, and Prices who died between the years 1840 to 1880. If you need first names, I have those. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Sylvia Wilson [email protected]
CHEROKEE BY BLOOD Records of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in the U.S. Court of Claims 1906-1910 This is a set of 9 books (I have the first 2). "In 1904 the Eastern Cherokee won a million-dollar judgement against the U.S. because of its violation of the treaties of 1835-36 and 1845. The payments were to go to all living persons who had been members of the Eastern Cherokee tribe at the time of the treaties, or to their descendants if they were deceased. Over 46,000 people filed claims. This series of volumns presents detailed abstracts of those applications, including numerous verbatim transcriptions of affidavits by the applicants, their families and friends. Since most of the applicants were descendants, rather than original tribe members, and had to prove their descent, the quantity of genealogical data in these volumns is staggering. About 9/10 of the applicants lived west of the Mississippi (probably because of The Trail of Tears [my comment]) in the early 1900's when they made their applications, with the balance living predominantly in the southeast. Although the applicants had to had Indian ancestry, the majority were normally white, and a significant number of blacks are also included." I hope to eventually get all 9 volumns and if you want a name researched, let me know, if you are interested in purchasing these books, go to www.heritagebooks.com - the cost is about 40. per book. delilah evans/avans Nunahi Duna Dio Hilu I We Must Never Forget the "Trail of Tears". Thanks, Sue. Yes, that is the family. Since I was in Trenton, I have discovered that Mr Sammons' given name was James, and that his wife Betsy [wife of Bird Street] was Elizabeth Wilkinson. Many of the Wilkinson's in Dade County were her siblings. Only wish I had known that a couple years ago when I was visiting you. Looking for ANY help possible, Trying to research my Father's family, here's what I know: James Cardruss Thompson (my father) brn 5-29-1908 Rising Fawn, one sister Edith Eugene Thompson brn. 3-18-1905 Rising Fawn. Their parents were William Oscar Thompson and Ola Long Thompson at the time of their deaths 1920's and or 1930's they were living in Chattanoga Tn. possibly East Lake area or East Ridge. Ola Long Thompson: it isn't known to us if Long is her given middle name that she kept after marriage or if that were her maiden name, my father was known to have referred to Grandpa O'Neal and it is thought that this is her side of the family possible her father or maternal grandfather. And my mother thinks that it was at Grandpa O'Neal's home that my father was born. William and Ola should show up on census data from 1900 and possibly 1880. We don't know where they were buried but likely Dade County. Anyone, any help will be greatly appreciated! I'm Tommy Thompson from Rockwood Tn. email [email protected]

Donna, He doesn't have a tombstone. If he did, I'd be surprised as very few burials for that time period in Dade Co do have. Were the children of James, Lewis (md Rachel Matilda Ross), Francis, Benjamin and Sarah (md Joe Brown)? These children were enumerated on the 1850 census in the household of Bird Street.
