I was told a film of the Bethel Baptist Church minutes exist for Coweta/Troup County. The time period should be about 1832 to 1870. My gggrandfather was one of the first church clerks. Does anyone on the list know how I can get a copy of the film. I tried inter-library loan and that did not work. Thanks for your help Linda Risinger Houston, TX

I sent to the GA Archives for a probate record of Coweta Co. and even though the cost is a bit prohibitive, $25 per request, the service was reliable and after calling the Coweta Co. office, I felt it would be the best route for me. The county office didn't want to copy more than a few pages at a time and my record had more than 50 pages. Just another option for you to consider. :) Anne mwise@prodigy.net P.S. I found the Coweta Co. Genealogical Society EXTREMELY Helpful!! Dear Mell, The address you want is: Probate Court Coweta County PO Box 945 Newnan, GA 30264-0945 I don't know the cost; copies are 25 cents apiece if you do them yourself. If you write to the Coweta County Genealogical Society; PO Box 1014; Newnan, GA 30264 and include a SASE, they will probably look up the marriage for you because they have a CD ROM of them. Good hunting to you. My great grandfather John Webb died in Coweta Co. in 1856 and lived around Moreland, could there be a newspaper that may have carried his obituary? Also he had bought part of Lot No. 164, How could I find out where that is located? Thank You, Mell
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! Charles
I am doing some research in Coweta Co. on my great grandfather John A. Webb. John married Eveline Herridge in 1844 in Coweta. John died about 1857 according to the tax records. He died intestate and I would like his probate. Where do I send for this? I have the number of his packet. I would also like to no what it would cost. I think Eveline married again but not in Coweta Co. She would have married after 1860. Is there a book of marriages for the state of Georgia that I could find her marriage in? Mell
--------- Forwarded message ---------- From: LITTLETN@aol.com To: TNROANE-L@rootsweb.com Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 19:43:32 EST Subject: [TNROANE-L] Twas the night before Christmas Message-ID: <d2dafec6.366881b4@aol.com> Genealogist's Christmas Eve (Twas the night before Christmas) 'Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, Not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote; Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and such Were proof that my work had become too much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop >From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot. Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills, While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers, I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright. Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash. When what with my wondering eyes should appear, But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer. Up to the house top the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys and 'ole Santa Claus, too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa--KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good 'ole Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk). Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy: When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned, As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amusement--the cover it read Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead. "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug." He said as he gave me a great Santa hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folk who can't find a thing." "Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess." As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle. And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family history is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!" According to my sources Coweta was an Indian tribe. In 1773 name was spelled Caouita, in 1818 it was spelled Cowetau and in 1825 maps showed it being spelled Cowetaw. They were known as the 2nd great Muskogee tribe of the Lower Creeks. This info came from "Coweta Chronicles" by Jones and Reynolds, of which I wish I had a copy. My family is from Senoia, in Coweta County, and Senoia was either an Indian Chief, a medicine man, who is buried at "the little one-room Methodist church" in Senoia. Never knew any of this. Thanks for asking the question.
I am new to this list, and wonder what does the word COWETA mean?
