    1. [GACOWETA-L] Storey families
    2. candace gravelle
    3. Was looking through some old "Coweta Courier" publications from the Coweta County Genealogical Society that I had from 1997 (Vol. 16 #3 Spring 1997) which has an article about Storey families in Coweta County, GA, with excerpts as follows: ..."John S. Storey left Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1825 and came to Coweta County, GA...The Spartanburg, SC County Courthouse lists recorded wills and land records...George Storey, the grandfather of John S. Storey received land in a grant from King George III. The first house that George Storey built was burned, the second one was still on the property (in 1963?). Remains of Storey's Fort, built during the Rev. War, were still on the property. The Fairforest Presbyterian Church which was organized by George Storey and other early settlers was not standing, but the cemetery was there with many marked Storey graves. We went to the home of Mrs. Mae Ward who had George Storey's Bible and copies of the land grants from King George III. "The Family Storey", published in 1955, gave the information from the George Storey Bible. John Storey, the fourth child of George married Nancy McIlwain. The names of the children were unknown but were reared in Georgia. The first Storey Will listed in the Spartanburg County Courthouse was John Storey, Nancy Storey, administrator, Sept 9, 1799. Nancy (Agnes) Storey and James Storey came to the courthouse to settle the estate of John Storey on Nov 23, 1799. The Newman, GA Presbyterian Church gave the names of the early Storey members. John S. Storey and Belinda Storey and five of their children were listed along with Anthony Storey, W.H. Storey and others. John S. Storey b. Sept 15, 1797, in Spartanburg County, SC died Apr 15, 1875 in Summerville, GA married Melinda (Belinda) Herston, d. 1898, Lindale, GA: Children: Martha Lucinda, Melinda Henderson and twins, Jasper Lafayette and Newton. Jasper Lafayette Storey, b. 20 Nov 1841, Carroll County, GA, d. 14 Mar 1920, Rome, GA, married in Coweta County, GA Jan 11, 1866 Nancy Susan Gentry, b. 29 Jun 1841, d. 4 Apr 1924 Rome GA. Children: Carrie, Newton A., John William, Irene and Susan. ...James McIlwain d. May 25, 1807 (age 94 yrs) married Jean, d. 29 Oct 1803 (age 71 yrs) Children: James, Jane, and Nancy. Jamaes and Jean McIllwain and daughter Jane are buried in the Fairforest Presbyterian Cemetery in Union County, SC. There are several unmarked graves with badly worn markers in the area of marked Storey graves in the Fairforest Presbyterian Cemetery. The early Sessions Book from the Fairforest Presbyterian Church which are housed in Montreat, NC shows John Storey as a witness Jan 18, 1793. He was recorded at Captain John Storey, his rank in the Revolutionary War. *Note: Volume 9, Issues 1 and 2 , 1989 has Storey information that is connected with this family.." Old issues of "The Coweta Courier" can be purchased for $4.75 from the Coweta County, Genealogical Society PO Box 1014 Newnan, Georgia 30264 Hope this helps someone in research on the Storey families in Coweta County, GA Candace in Oregon

    3. I recently came across an Indian Depredation of Richard Storey (son -- Jesse Storey; daughter -- Mary Hamilton). It was such an interesting record (and had absolutely nothing to do with what I was looking for at the time) that I transcribed it and put it on my website. If you're interested, the URL is: http://georgiaresearch.home.mindspring.com Once there, click on "Past Gems", then click on "An Indian Depredation". Richard Storey's claim was in 1821 and based on losses incurred 1770-1779. Joan Pettengill

    2. Hi, In my desperation I am posting my "lost" Pennington again. I have lots of information once the line ties into the Nixon line of Coweta Co., GA, but I have a hard time finding anything previous since Silas died at such a young age in the Civil War. 2. Donald L Padget
    3. Dear Janice, According to Coweta County, Georgia Marriages 1827-1979, William H. Marshall and Curicy Ann Upchurch were married 23 Mar 1848. Since someone has checked the 1850 and 1860 census records, it's possible that they moved to a neighboring county. You might try the counties around Coweta, asking for one or two specific census records.
