Ga Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Columbia/10647 Surname: ------------------------- Hi Vivian, I had the good fortune to stumble across them (the original issues) on eBay, where I'm always looking for old newspapers that I can add to my website. As to other originals, I have recently read that once they were microfilmed, the originals were usually either (a) sold to dealers, where they were usually broken up & sold individually, or (b) most commonly: pulped. Pretty sad, when you think of how delightful it is to scroll through microfilm for hours... NOT! There's an excellent book on just that subject, just recently published, though I warn you that if you read it, you'll be alarmed & disturbed. It's called "Double Fold," by Nicholson Baker. The first chapter is available online on one of the NY Times sites, though I don't have the link handy. If you'd like to locate originals, all I can suggest is that you troll eBay on a regular basis and inquire of the various old newspaper dealers. Otherwise, try the library there in Augusta. Hopefully, all the pages and issues you need actually were filmed, and the quality is adequate for viewing. I have no gripe with libraries at all, and I'm grateful for the filmed copies. I just wish that the originals were available (they don't really turn to dust...I have several hundred pounds of old newspapers collected now!), especially now that we have the technology to make decent images of them. Them's the breaks, though. At least I'm going to hang onto MY original old newspapers! AND make them available to everyone who wants to see them, online and for free. I index the names in mine, too, which slows me down, but that's what makes my website useful. Besides, it's more fun than giving away money! It's fascinating & fun to do.
