    1. [GACOLUMB] Colonial Wills of August Dist, St Paul Parish, Richmond County
    2. faded genes
    3. Forgive me if you receive this a second time, but I never saw it hit the list first time. Don't know if it didn't make or if I am just having a classic senior moment: The area was called District of Augusta, the St Paul Parish, then Richmond Co. Some of the early colonial wills of the area were taken to England, stored at the Tower of London and eventually returned to the state of GA. Will books A, AA and some loose ones were recovered. Will book B was never found. However, most people don't realise that there are MANY original American records still languishing in various repositories in the United Kingdom. The ones recovered are [to the best of my knowledge] now in the Georgia state archives. A book of abstracts of these wills - Abstracts of Colonial Wills of the State of Georgia 1733-1777 - was published in 1962 by The Atlanta Town Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. 1. [GACOLUMB] Recorded Land Transactions
    2. Roger Crabtree
    3. Hi Joe and Group, Joe, thanks for the clear explanation of Richmond, Columbia, and St. Paul. I haven't looked at many deeds in Columbia Co., but I have looked at deed books in other GA counties. It isn't unusual to find transactions for land located in one county recorded in another county. Sometimes the Grantor or the Grantee didn't live in the county where the land was located, so the deed may have been recorded in the home county of the Grantor or Grantee. Sometimes the Grantee lived nearer the county seat of a neighboring county than to his own, so he took the deed to be recorded in the closer location. Just one more reason for always checking neighboring counties. Pat Crabtree Moncks Corner, SC

He is my 3rd great grandfather. Also, you had some articles on the Magruder's. My 3rd great grandmother was Mary Magruder. Her father was John Magruder. George Magruder was probally kin to them. I don't have alot on the Magruders but would appreciate any info on them. Also in my line are Fullers,Gunby, Flint, Lovelace, Smalley, Briscoe, Beall, O'Neal, Hardin,Eubank, Scott,Blanchard, Tankersley, etc..... If you know of any more info on any of these, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Cindy Fuller Weathersbee

    3. Joe, Thanks for the clear explanation. I had searched through the Genweb pages for the county histories, and I just wasn't getting the whole picture. Those GA counties confuse me so. Ga Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Columbia/545 Surname: Folds, Eads ------------------------- Hannah Eads married George Folds, Jr. in either Columbia County or Richmond Co., GA. I think that George Folds, Jr. was a brother to my John Folds who married Mary Wilkins 1792 in Columbia County, GA. My John Folds moved to Jasper co., Ga in 1811 but George Folds apparently died in Columbia County ca 1827. See Columbia Co., GA deeds: Deed Book X, pages 404-406; Deed Book X, pages 392-393; and Deed Book Y, pages 138-139. See Columbia Co. Tax Digests too. I think that the father of John Folds and George Folds, Jr. was a George Folds, Sr. of Richmond Co., GA. Many land records on him but nothing found yet concerning his family. Very happy to share information.

    1. [GACOLUMB] Columbia, Richmond, St. Pauls Parrish, etc.
    2. Listmembers, A great part of east central Georgia was St. Paul's Parish up to 1777, when Richmond County was created and it reverted to St. Paul's for a time during the British occupation and then Richmond again by 1783. Columbia county was cut off in December 1790. McDuffie was cut from Columbia and part of Warren County in 1870. Some records are mixed between Richmond County and Columbia. In my experience this has occurred when a deed was made and signed before 1790, when it was Richmond, and not recorded for years afterward and when it was recorded the name of the county had changed. Thus we can find records as old as 1783 and perhaps older in Columbia when the transaction was actually made on Richmond soil prior to December 1790. Also I have found at least one land transaction in another county recorded in Columbia. Let me hear your experience on this issue. Joe Tankersley Appling, Georgia

Ga Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Columbia/543 Surname: COBBS, JENKINS, JINKINS, FOALDS, FOLDS, HUFF, WILLIS, WILKINS ------------------------- The will of my 4th great-grandfather John EADES, SR., filed 4 Jan 1802 at Richmond Co. Courthouse, Augusta, GA, says: "To beloved daughters, Hannah FOALDS, Priscilla JINKINS, Mary WILLIS, Charlotty COBBS, $1.00 each." Rest of estate went to dau. Sarah HUGHES, sons John EADES, JR. [my ancestor] and Daniel EADES, and "my good friend Dolly HUFF". My notes say: "Hannah married a FOALDS before 1800 (her father's will). Have heard he was 'John'. A Mary FOALDS, a John FOALDS and a W. WILKINS signed as witnesses to her father's will, filed 4 Jan 1802, at Richmond Co. Courthouse in Augusta, Georgia." Also, "in Columbia Co. in 1793, a Barney HUFF was in Capt. Wm. WILKINS' Militia Co., along with John EADES, JR., Wm. HUGHES, Geo. FOLDS, JR., Richard FOLDS, Abraham COBB and Daniel COBB." I would be grateful for any info (and sources) on the FOALDS/FOLDS family, et al. Meanwhile, I will starting looking in Jasper Co., GA. Thanks for the lead! Anne Connell in FL

    3. Funny, Anne. <grin> Thank your hubby for calling Ed Collier there. That was so sweet. I am a little disappointed, but I guess I will find that line through Gardner Collier someday. It did sound like a promising lead, though. It is like losing a whole line of cousins somewhere. Hey, they could be living here, and I would not even know it!
