Yes, my ggg grandfather, Wyatt L Chamblin was a practicing physician in Columbia county in the early 1800s. His family was from Spartanburg SC. When I visited the Georgia archive I found that his medical training was in Ohio??. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and didn't get a copy of the mins which might explain a little more about Ohio. So people did seem to travel more than we think. bye Stephanie Joan Pettengill wrote: > > Neither Allen Jefferson Austin nor Laban Turk Austin are listed in the Index > to the Georgia Board of Physicians Minutes and Registry of Applicants (for > the complete index, see: www.georgiaresearch.com ); however, there is a > James Austin listed in the Minutes. > > Joan Pettengill > www.georgiaresearch.com > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Patricia Kruger <pekruger@prodigy.net> > To: <GACOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, February 18, 2001 7:33 PM > Subject: Re: [COLUMBIA CO.] Medical Schools in GA 1820 to 1870 > > > Try the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Neither Allen Jefferson Austin nor Laban Turk Austin are listed in the Index to the Georgia Board of Physicians Minutes and Registry of Applicants (for the complete index, see: www.georgiaresearch.com ); however, there is a James Austin listed in the Minutes. I have an ancestor from that period (1820's-30's) who "read" with a doctor. I think that means that he studied under another doctor's license and did not necessarily go to med school, but learned it as a kind of apprenticeship. Try the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. I have Georgia ancestors in that same time period who attended the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. If you don't find them in GA, don't hesitate to look farther afield - they were more mobile than we think. Dr. Allen Jefferson AUSTIN and Dr. Laban Turk AUSTIN, Sr. would have most likely attended medical school in GA between 1820 and 1870. Does anyone know what medical schools were in existence in GA during those years? Thanks for your help. Bob

Does anyone know if there are complete or partial records for Columbia County? Is Appling the county seat? Who do you call for record searches? Jim Seamans Jim, the court house is in Appling at the present time. They are building a new court house. There was a web page telling about it but I don't have the url now, probably the Columbia Co, webpage. I have been to the probate office in Appling and they are most helpful. Also, they will look up records for you when they have time to do it. I wouldn't ask for more than one item at a time as they do have their work to do. They also have the names of one or two ladies that do genealogy in that area. Don't go there on Wednesday as that is court day and the records room is closed to the public. They have land deeds, wills, marriage licenses and other records that go through probate. Census records you need to go to libraries, state or national archives. Ususally state archives has some census records of neighboring states. I know AL has some for Ga or at least has an index. Hope this helps. Beulah
