    3. You're welcome, Vivian - glad to help. You've seen those court houses that try to be helpful by putting their upper shelf items, like heavy ledger books, on rollers. I'm not very tall and I brought one down on my head, once ... actually threw my neck out ... and made me a bit shorter! I know that Jefferson County has copies of old newspaper at the courthouse, but does not have anyone to help you get them down, they are on the very top of their file cabinets. I don't climb ladders, at least not over 4 or 5 feet high. It is a shame that things are not taken better care of. Thanks again, Vivian

    3. Posted on: Columbia Co. Ga Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Columbia/10647 Surname: ------------------------- Hi Vivian, I had the good fortune to stumble across them (the original issues) on eBay, where I'm always looking for old newspapers that I can add to my website. As to other originals, I have recently read that once they were microfilmed, the originals were usually either (a) sold to dealers, where they were usually broken up & sold individually, or (b) most commonly: pulped. Pretty sad, when you think of how delightful it is to scroll through microfilm for hours... NOT! There's an excellent book on just that subject, just recently published, though I warn you that if you read it, you'll be alarmed & disturbed. It's called "Double Fold," by Nicholson Baker. The first chapter is available online on one of the NY Times sites, though I don't have the link handy. If you'd like to locate originals, all I can suggest is that you troll eBay on a regular basis and inquire of the various old newspaper dealers. Otherwise, try the library there in Augusta. Hopefully, all the pages and issues you need actually were filmed, and the quality is adequate for viewing. I have no gripe with libraries at all, and I'm grateful for the filmed copies. I just wish that the originals were available (they don't really turn to dust...I have several hundred pounds of old newspapers collected now!), especially now that we have the technology to make decent images of them. Them's the breaks, though. At least I'm going to hang onto MY original old newspapers! AND make them available to everyone who wants to see them, online and for free. I index the names in mine, too, which slows me down, but that's what makes my website useful. Besides, it's more fun than giving away money! It's fascinating & fun to do. The Surnames listed with orginal query are also listed in a deed in Rutherford County, TN. I'm interested in knowing if those listed as the previous owners in Columbia County, GA had connections in TN. A lawsuit might have been filed in connection with this land transaction.

    2. The only information that I have has been passed from generation to generation. This is what I have been told by my father and so on; My father was Herbert Daniel Whitaker, his father was William Ambrose Whitaker, his father was Joshua Parker Whitaker (Grandpa Josh), his father (I think) was also Joshua P.(Parker) Whitaker. Joshua P. Whitaker was killed by his wife in 1876 when Grandpa Josh was 4 years of age. Grandpa Josh was born in 1872 and died in 1939. When Joshua P. Whitaker's wife killed him, she took Grandpa Josh and his brother "Billy" and hid in the woods. Well, the authorities found her and the boys and the boys was put in different homes in the community. She was put in an insane asylum (don't know where). Also, I do not have a name for her, have been told that she was a full-blooded Creek Indian. I do know that Grandpa Josh was raised by Mr. Billy Reeves from McDuffie County and is shown in the 1880 census for McDuffie County living in W. H. Reeves household as "adopted son". I am at a brick wall concerning these people, I did receive an email from Bev Whitaker several months ago that she had in her files somewhere: "Joshua P. Whitaker murdered by his wife 1st and 21st June, 1876" and this is listed in the Mt. Moriah minutes. I have even tried to find the Mt. Moriah that she could be speaking about (I only know of one in the area where it could be possible a match) with no luck. Any information that you possibly might find or could direct me into looking for information further will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for responding, Vivian Whitaker McBride

Sources and click on Genealogy Sources. Lots of good info there! This library has on microfilm, what I believe is the most complete known collection of the old Augusta Chronicle (under its various names). Also, Alice WALKER, head of the Genealogy Dept., has created a 4 vol. "Personal Name Index to the Augusta Chronicle." This invaluable set is in many libraries across the country. Alice is a super lady and very helpful. Anne C.
