If you turn on Clarys Cut Road just after you pass Harlem High School, and there is a road off to your left that is blocked off and has a lock in it. It has been several years since I have been down there, will have to check it out again. You have to walk a good ways down the little dirt road and then cut off through the woods and I mean woods, not just trees. When we went there was a LOT of underbrush and undergrowth that you had to get through. I would be nice for a group of us to get together when cold weather gets here and go back in there. We would have to talk to the paper company and get their ok, and a hunting club has it leased so we would have to wait till deer season was out. Looking for parents and siblings of Charles Nelson who died 1805 in Columbia County, GA
That is interesting because when we were up in Harlem for the week of the 4th of July, we looked at some property on Clary Cut Road. The entire length of it is being developed! Where on earth are those graves? By the way, for you guys that live in Columbia Co, we are looking for 3-5 acres of property. We will be able to buy as soon as our house here sells (we live in FL). We are interested in Columbia Co and McDuffie Co around Dearing :) Just in case anyone is selling... michele simmons lewis Diggin' in the dirt, lookin' fer them roots!
I think Harlem was named after the NY Harlem. The Chamber of Commerce there has an interesting booklet re: Harlem history. It's a nice little town. Home of Oliver Hardy of Laurel and Hardy fame. ...Mike -----Original Message----- From: rconnell [mailto:rconnell@cfl.rr.com] Sent: Monday, July 23, 2001 4:20 PM To: GACOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [COLUMBIA CO.] Re: GACOLUMB-D Digest V01 #97 This is all very interesting. The Magruder Plot where the Olive Graves are, is located off of Clarys Cut Road in the woods there that the paper company has, it is the road just past Harlem High School, on the right going towards Harlem. I have been there and have pictures of the graves that were there then, I will just have to find them in the many pictures that I have. It was a fairly long walk to the graves and a lot of it was through thick woods, this is definitely not the time of year to go to it!!! Snakes and the heat do not sound like a go hunt to me. Bill Maddox, Please check and see if you have somehow blocked my e-mail address. I am sure AOL has that option because Outlook express does. (This is a way to block unwanted mail from coming in). Sorry for sending this message via Columbia Co list but Bill got a new computer and for some reason is able to receive everyone's messages (including this list) except for mine! michele simmons lewis Diggin' in the dirt, lookin' fer them roots!
Michele, Would you give me the DUDLEY'S and LANGSTON'S buried at the Harlem Memorial Cem, Thank you, Miriam
The info I gave about the location of the Magruder cemeteries was out of cemetery book. I don't know about it personally. By the way, are you talking about that gorgeous house that has the bottom part of an old fashioned european windmill on the property near the big library? Oh my goodness! My husband's aunt wanted to show me where the library was and we passed by that house! It is beautiful. I told her I wanted that house and she just looked at me like I was nuts. We are moving up there in 16 months so who knows....maybe..... I would love to have the more current cemetery book. Is it available yet?? michele
Hey You'all, You said that: "There is a Magruder Cemetery which is located at the corner of Louisville and Wrightsboro Roads." This is at Magruder's corner or the windmill corner but I have never seen a cemetery plot there. "There is also a Magruder Family Plot. There are only two names listed for it and both are the last name of OLIVE. I assume there must be some unmarked graves there. There are no directions given for this cemetery plot which leads me to believe it must be on private property somewhere." There was an Olive Family Plantation over on Columbia Rd. near the intersection of Louisville and Columbia Rd. where Olive Grove Baptist Church is now. Joe Tankersley (Joseph Jordan Tankersley) 2627 Louisville Rd. Appling P.S. Did you'all know about the new and more complete cemetery book that Jean and Bill Blackard are putting together through the Historical Society? I have helped them some in finding old cemeteries.
Hi Walt I thought I might have a copy of at least one of your Pollards when I copied census pages for my Chamblins but unfortunately I see I don't. However, I have picked up on Ancestry.com, a Levi A Pollard d 5 May 1930 Richmond Co, Ga Certificate 13792 This I PRESUME is Levi A Pollard Senior. I also picked up for SocSec... Levi Pollard b 18 July 1894 d Oct 1973 residence Appling, GA. Again, I PRESUME this to be Levi A Junior. In June of 1940 Levi A Pollard Jr purchased land from my grandmother, Eliz Stephenson Anderson and her brother, John James Stephenson and her sister Alice Stephenson. This was land which was inherited by their Mother, Ida Chamblin Stephenson from Eliz Eve Lamkin Eve and passed down to the children. I am even going to let you see the land LA Pollard Jr purchased (smile) http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/columbia/oakhill.jpg On the copies of property records which I obtained 5-6 yrs ago when I visited Columbia Co, it shows that the land passed from LA Pollard Jr to Robert W Pollard Sr...and another record shows Robt Pollard Jr. The Pollards were acquiring much of the land in the area of Kegs Creek and later the Dam (or the northern section of the county) for their lumber business. I did stop to speak to Robt Pollard Jr at the business but it was lunch time and I missed him but intended to show him the picture I have recently put in the US Gen web archives above. Also, the intersection of Washington Rd (leading down to Augusta, GA) and Scott's Ferry Rd is called "Pollard's Corner"...as I recall the Pollard's had a home on the NE corner of this intersection. Hope this little bit helps bye Stephanie Walter Boswell wrote: > > ATTN.: Calling all good Samaritans on the Columbia County, GA List wherever > you may be! > > I am looking for anyone who has access to any one, or all, of the following > Columbia County censuses: 1830, 1840, 1850, and/or 1860. Michele My G Grandfather was Ellis Lewis his children were Annie [ Lou Ann's Grandmother], Willie Otis [ my grandfather] who married Dora Spires . Her mother was a Shanklin ---- Any information on Shanklins? W.O. and Dora had 5 children who lived, Mary married Furman Crook from Lincoln Co. Mannis married Henry Hensley Columbia Co. Pat who married Alex Richardson from S.C.? My mother Miriam married John Bertram Rupert W.V. and Lincoln Co.Ga. William Edward Lewis was the youngest and he died last July. All the rest are still alive and I'm sure would be glad to assist you if you called them. Aunt Mary's husband Uncle Crook is 95 but still has an amazing memory. It was he who told me where the old Lewis cemetery was in Grovetown. Almost left out Ellis' other children; John, Clinton and Howard.
Thanks for your help looking up D'Antignac. Interesting results. Jackie

Hello. I'd like to correspond with anyone researching the Moore and Crawford families of Columbia Co. GA. Pamela E. Moore married Simmons Crawford 1819. One source shows Pamela's Mother's name to be Patsy...no mention of Father's name. My belief is that Pamela's sister is Mary Moore who married Samuel Bowdre early 1800's Columbia Co. My gg-grandmother is one of the 7 children of this marriage. I have the guardianship records on the 7 Bowdre children in Columbia Co. Simmons Crawford was appointed their guardian in 1829. Possibly, Pamela Moore Crawford was the children's Aunt. Thanks, Pauleta Hicks pauleta@comanchetx.com

Not sure right off the top of my head, I will try to find my Magruder information and I think that I have a lot of Offut information somewhere too. I will look, it has got to be here somewhere. I am trying to get ready for a reunion, so if I can't find it right off, it may be a week or two before I can really dig, but I have other things that I am looking for too, maybe I will hit paydirt on all of them.
