Susan, I have a couple of suggestions for you to consider. First of all I would locate Augustus on the Colquitt Co. census of 1910, find out if he owned land. If he did own land I would locate all deeds in which Augustus was either grantor or grantee. My goal would be learning when Augustus arrived in Colquitt Co. Often the first land he bought in Colquitt might contain the county/state from which he came or if he was born in Colquitt Co. it might point you in the direction to look for his parents. Too, land records might indicate when a person is leaving an area or has already left and is now selling land in the "other" place of residence. Depending on what is gleaned from deeds, if in fact, Augustus was a landowner, I would then backtrack Augustus via the 1900 census beginning iwth Colquitt Co. Colquitt was cut out of Thomas, so I would also check Thomas Co. censuses if Augustus was not found in Colquitt Co. Using census indexes/indices backtrack Augustus until his parents are located. Then repeat with Augustus's parents. Pay particular attention to others of the surname VICK enumerated in the various censuses you read. They might prove to be relatives! How old was Augustus when Carl was born? That would help a great deal in determining the next step in backtracking the family. When/if you backtrack Augustus to a time when he was single, then look in that area/county for record of marriage. The marriage record _might_ give names of Frances' parents. But again by using the census indexes it would not be too hard to place Frances in a birth family since you know her maiden name. I would certainly obtain Frances' estates papers from AR. Treasures might be found there! Nor would I overlook any information on Carl's siblings. Sometimes a sibling leaves a big paper trail. Just a few thoughts off the top of my head so to speak. Hope they help rather than confuse. Good luck!
