There are some Tarrants that were buried out from Bethel Community in a little cemetery called the John Carver Cemetery. My mother's family used to tend land beside it and they played there as children. In 1978, according to the Coffee County cemetery book, there were three Tarrants listed, Edneral ( a child), Gordon Tarrant 5/6/1841-5/5/1926, and Maryan Tarrant 10/10/1948-1/8/1928. It also lists 13 unmarked graves. I've told this story before, a long time ago, but my Mother remembered the cemetery because of all the unusual items on the graves. There were lots of spoons, cups and saucers, and sea shells. I believe that she and my uncle agreed there were about 35 or so graves there. In the past couple of years, some "kind" soul took it upon himself to clean up the cemetery and removed every brick, staub, post, wooden marker, large rocks, whatever there was. They mowed the grass and cut up an old tree. The cemetery has a fence around it, and the ground is now smooth and clear except for the indentions that show where unmarked graves are. I hope the person who cleaned up the cemetery is not on this list, because I certainly don't want to offend anyone, and I'm sure he or she meant well, but that person destroyed a lot of history when he cleaned up those old graves. There are only about 5 or 7 identifiable graves there now. Plain markers, no spoons, no shells, nothing. I would love to identify these graves, in fact I 'd love to identify all the unknown graves in Coffee and Atkinson, but, of course it is now impossible to do so. In Coffee County, Julie Quincey wants to save trees, I want to save graves.
