    2. Hi Folks, Seems my "Elizabeth Pearson" question has generated some dialogue. Hopefully between all of us we'll be able to help one another out. Here's my story: I'm actually researching my husband's gr-grandmother, Ila Ione Pearson/Coxwell. She was found on the 1880 Coffee County, GA census as Elizabeth Pearson's daughter. 1880 Coffee County, Georgia Census index lists the following: Pearson, Elizabeth (38) b. GA, dau Ila (8) b.GA, dau Angel (6) b. GA and dau Georgia (2) b. GA. Ila told her son, Elza, that she was actually born in Gallup, NM and was Navajo.  I would like to know how she came to be with Elizabeth Pearson.  And....where was Elizabeth's husband? I have some other information that seems to back up Ila's claim. Would love to connect with someone who knows more about this particular Elizabeth Pearson. Thank you so much, Bev Tiner mbtin83@aol.com or chozijoy@aol.com

Bev, Apparently the Elizabeth Pearson that you are looking for is not my second cousin, three times removed, Martha Elizabeth (Meeks) Pearson Moncreif, who went by Elizabeth. My Elizabeth was not a Pearson during the the 1880 census. As you can see by my paragraph below, she didn't become a Pearson until 1882. Then, she became a Moncreif in 1886. Emmett, Benajah Pearson and Elizabeth only had one daughter. You can see in the paragraph that her other two daughters were by her second husband. I will send you a copy of my page 174. Clyde Page 54: #bda. Martha Elizabeth Meeks was born Jan. 14, 1853, in Appling County, Georgia (see pg. 17). She went by the name Elizabeth. She was listed with her parents in Clinch County, Ga., during the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses. During the 1880 census, Elizabeth was counted twice. She was also listed as a housekeeper, with the family of Benajah Pearson, in Coffee County, Georgia. Her family is in "Cole-Meeks," II, 162-63; and "Lott," pg. 68. Elizabeth married first Benajah Pearson Jan. 29, 1882, in Coffee County. [He was born Oct. 7, 1811, in Wilkinson County, and was the widower of Mary Jane "Pink" (Lott) Pearson. See Lott in the Related Families Section, pg. 1338. An article on him is in "Wiregrass," V, 332-33 & VI, 340. The town of Pearson, Ga., was named after him.] Their child: Narcissa Tabitha (see pg. 173). Benajah died Feb. 20, 1885, in Coffee County. Elizabeth married second James Austin Moncreif Dec. 23, 1886, in Coffee County. [He was born May 18, 1859, and was the son of Austin and Georgia A. (Bedell) Moncreif. Information on his parents is in "Wiregrass," V, 292.] Their children: Amoret "Retta" (see pg. 174), Augusta "Gussie" (see pg. 174), Jessie (see pg. 174) and Willie H. "Bill" (see pg. 174). Elizabeth died Jan. 31, 1895, in Coffee County. James married second Ella Douglas. They were farming in Coffee County during the 1900 and 1910 censuses. James died May 18, 1918. Benajah, Elizabeth and James are buried in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, northwest of Pearson, Georgia.
