    3. In answer to #3: Sherman's army proceeded North thru S.C. and then into N. C. They went thru Columbia, SC and burned it. Finally, remnant Confederate forces under Gen Joe Johnston fought them at several small battles and a final larger one at Bentonville, NC. After Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Johnston surrendered near Durham, NC on April 26, 1865.
