Obituaries & Death Notices from The Douglas Breeze, pg 30 Compiled by Catherine Fussell Wells December 4, 1896 Mr. Daniel Peterson Dead. The said news of the death of Mr. DFaniel Peterson reached Doulgas Saturday afternoon. While the announcement of his death was not unexpected yet it was a shock to his large circle of relatives and friends here. The end came peacefully and quietly at 11:15 o'clock Saturday morning. Mr. Peterson was one of the most extensive planters and largest merchants of the county, his store in Pickren being the center of trade for the lower half of the Pickren District. He has one brother,---or half brother, rather,--- in Douglas, Mr. Benejah Peterson besides hundreds of relatives in this and adjoining counties, in fact the Peterson family is one of the largest and most influential families in Southern Georgia. Mr. Peterson's remains were laid to rest in Bethel churchyard Sunday. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his death. Same book, pg. 98 February 18, 1905 Death's Doings Mrs. Martha Peterson. Mrs. martha Peterson mother of Messrs Benajah Peterson, Joseph E. Peterson, Mrs. Fisher Gaskin and another daughter living out of state, died last Saturday at the ripe old age of 77 years. Her affliction is said to have been heart trouble. As stated she was well advanced in years, still, her death was a shock. All her children are grown and have families of their own, and while there was universal regret it is well that no little ones are left without a mother's care. Mrs. Peterson was a pioneer, having been among the early citizens of the county, and she and her husband, who has been dead some twenty years, could tell something of the hardships and ill-conveniences of settling a county without railroads or other methods of connection or news from the outside world. Her remains were interred at the Douglas cemetery Sunday afternoon. Hope this helps. Catherine Fussell Wells Genealogy -- it's my business!
